Former Dutch Islamophobe Van Doorn converts to Islam Story :: Interview

arnoud van doorn geert wilders party member convert to islam

In Holland, a major islamophobic political and social activist, former member of parliament from a right-wing party, Arnoud van Doorn accepted Islam.

The former islamophobe announced his decision to accept Islam on his Twitter profile. He says it is a new beginning of his life and published the declaration of Shahada (the words on monotheism to become a Muslim) in Arabic.

At first, other users took the news as a joke. After all, an active supporter of a notorious Dutch hater of Islam, Wilders, has repeatedly approved islamophobic statements and public actions, and personally participated in them.

But van Doorn, who now serves as a regional adviser at the City Hall in The Hague, personally confirmed his decision to practice Islam in an official letter to the city Mayor.

Most recently, the politician filed a formal application to the mayor of the city to allow him to perform prayers obligatory for Muslims during his working hours.

The information on conversion of van Doorn to Islam was confirmed on the official website of the mosque Al-Yaqeen in The Hague.

“We wish brother Arnoud a good new life as a Muslim and a lot of strength with the acquisition of knowledge”, the website says.

After accepting Islam, van Doorn gave an exclusive interview to Qatari English-language TV channel Al Jazeera, the text of which he published on his Twitter page:

Al Jazeera: What would you say to the people who are sceptic towards your conversion into the Islam?

Van Doorn: I can understand that people are sceptic, especially since it is unexpected for many of them. In my own close circle people have known that I have been actively researching the Koran, Hadith, Sunnah and other writings for almost a year now. In addition, I have had numerous conversations with Muslims about the religion. This is a very big decision, which I have not taken lightly.

Al Jazeera: How did you get in touch with the Islam?

Van Doorn: I have heard many negative stories about the Islam, but I am not a person who follows opinions of others without doing my own research and forming my own opinion. Therefore, I have actually started to deepen my knowledge of the Islam out of curiosity. My colleague Aboe Khoulani from the City Council in The Hague has brought me further into contact with the as-Soennah mosque, which has guided me even further. There, I have been received very warmly and very positively.

Al Jazeera: In hindsight, do you have regrets of joining the PVV (Freedom Party)?

Van Doorn: I have learned that every experience in life has a purpose. However, with the knowledge I have today, I would have undoubtedly made a different choice.

Al Jazeera: Which reactions have you received regarding your conversion?

Van Doorn: According to some people I am a traitor, but according to most others I have actually made a very good decision. The reactions are generally positive though. And I also receive quite some support via twitter. It feels good that people who do not know me personally have understanding of my situation and support me in my choice.

Al Jazeera: Is there anything else you would like to state?

Van Doorn: I have made mistakes in life as many others. From these mistakes I have learned a lot. And by my conversion into the Islam I have the feeling that I finally found my path. I realize that this is a new start and that I still have much to learn as well. The expectation is that I will continue to face much resistance, also from certain government institutions. I have all faith in Allah to support me and to guide me through these moments.

Geert Wilders(Fitna Movie Maker) Party Member, Arnoud van Doorn, Accepts Islam

Far-right Dutch Politician Reverts to Islam

AMSTERDAM – A leading member in far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders’ party has reverted to Islam after an extensive study about the Islamic religion and Muslims.

“I can understand people are skeptic, especially that it is unexpected for many of them,” Arnoud Van Doorn told Al-Jazeera English satellite channel.

“This is a very big decision, which I have not taken lightly.”

The news about Doorn’s reversion first came to the surface last month when he tweeted “new beginning”.

He later posted a tweet in Arab pronouncing the Shahadah (proclamation of faith).

The politician later announced that he reverted to Islam, giving no more information about the reasons behind the decision.

“In my own close circle people have known that I have been actively researching the Qur’an, Hadith, Sunnah and other writings for almost a year now,” he said.

“In addition, I have had numerous conversations with Muslims about the religion.”

Driven by his party’s anti-Islam discourse, Doorn decided to dig in for the truth about the religion himself.

“I have heard so many negative stories about Islam, but I am not a person who follows opinions of others without doing my own research,” he said.

“Therefore, I have actually started to deepen my knowledge of the Islam out of curiosity.

“My colleague Aboe Khoulani from the City Council in The Hague has brought me further into contact with the as-Soennah mosque, which has guided me even further.”

A member of the Dutch parliament and The Hague city council, Doorn’s name has long been associated with anti-Islam rhetoric by Wilders’ PVV party.

Wilders himself is known for his rants against Islam, Muslims and the Noble Qur’an.

New Beginning

Doorn’s decision to embrace Islam has won mixed reactions in the Netherlands.

According to some people I am a traitor, but according to most others I have actually made a very good decision,” he told Aljazeera.

“The reactions are generally positive and I also received quite some support via twitter.

“It feels good that people who do not know me personally have understanding of my situation and support me in my choice.”

For the Dutch politician, finding Islam was finally guiding him to the true path in his life.

“I have made mistakes in life as many others. From these mistakes I have learned a lot,” Doorn said.

“And by my conversion to Islam I have the feeling that I finally found my path.

“I realize that this is a new start and that I still have much to learn as well.”

Departing from his earlier life as a PVV member, Doorn expects much resistance in his political life.

“The expectation is that I will continue to face much resistance, also from certain government institutions,” he said.

“I have all faith in Allah to support me and to guide me through these moments.”

From Wilders to Muhammad: Former Freedom Party vice-chairman “Van Doorn” converts to Islam

A former member of Geert Wilders’s anti-immigration Freedom Party has converted to Islam.

Arnoud van Doorn, who until December 2011 was vice-chairman of the PVV group on The Hague’s city council, announced his “new start” on Twitter.

He also posted a tweet in Arabic declaring that “there is no god but Allah and Mohammed is his prophet,” in accordance with one of the five pillars of Islam.

The 46-year-old has continued on the council as an independent candidate since splitting with Wilders’s party. He declined to comment on his reasons for his conversion, saying only that his religion was a “private matter”.

In January Van Doorn (pictured, right, with Dutch Iranian politician Ehsan Jami in 2010) was questioned by prosecutors about an article in the Hague edition of the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper based on confidential papers that he leaked to a journalist.

The leak was discovered during a wiretapped phone call while Van Doorn was being investigated over allegations that he sold soft drugs to children aged 14 and 15.

Van Doorn said the allegations were the result of a misunderstanding and that he had been involved in an undercover operation to unmask drug dealers in central The Hague. He admitted he had not properly considered the risks involved.

The articles concerned plans to sell the World Forum, an international conference centre in The Hague, which was discussed during a closed session of the council.

Amid a nationwide debate in France surrounding attitudes towards the Islamic veil, or hijab, a French rapper has surprised fans by announcing her conversion to Islam and choosing to wear a headscarf.

French rapper Mélanie Georgiades, known as Diam’s, made her first TV appearance with her new image.

Mélanie Georgiades, known as Diam’s, has gone through what onlookers have described as a “complete transformation” from an image she had prior to 2009.

Since 2009, Diam’s had been unusually absent from the mainstream rap scene, prompting more than three years of controversy over her whereabouts, despite making the odd public appearance with her scarf.
But recently the French rapper made her first television appearance with her new image.

Diam’s appeared in an exclusive TV interview with French TV station TF1, to talk about a past experience with drugs, including hallucinating narcotics, and being in a mental asylum until she discovered the “serenity of Islam.” The rapper said the religion was introduced to her by coincidence, when she saw a Muslim friend praying.

Diam’s, said she has been married for over a year and is a now a new mother, moving far away from her drug-relate past.

In her TV interview she said her “conversion to Islam was the result of a personal conviction, after understanding the religion and reading the Holy Quran.”

When asked about wearing the hijab in France, a country which has banned the niqab, she said: “I believe that I live in a tolerant society, and I don’t feel hurt by criticism, but by insults and stereotyping and ready-made judgments.”

French rapper Mélanie Georgiades, known as Diam’s, made her first TV appearance with her new image.

Asked by her host about why she is wearing a hijab while many Muslim women don’t wear it, and don’t find it to be a religious obligation, she answered: “I see it as a divine order or a divine advice, this brings joy to my heart and for me this is enough.”

Stardom?

Diam’s said that by converting to Islam she gained comfort, adding that stardom doesn’t fit in with her life anymore, adding “this has warmed my heart, as I know now the purpose of my existence, and why am I here on Earth.”

Diam’s criticized the media which photographed her coming out of one of the mosques in France, wearing her Hijab and looking at her mobile, preceded by a man in a training suit, which many believed to be her husband.

Discussing how her life was like before her conversion to Islam, Diam’s said: “I was very famous and I had what every famous person looks for, but I was always crying bitterly alone at home, and this is what none of my fans had felt.”

She added: “I was heavily addicted to drugs, including hallucinating narcotics and was admitted in mental asylum to recover, but this was in vain until I heard one of my Muslim friends saying ‘I am going to pray for a while and will come back,’ so I told her that I want to pray as well.”

Recalling that moment, Diam’s said: “it was the first time that I touched the floor with head, and I had a strong feeling that I have never experienced before, and I believe now that kneeling in prayer, shouldn’t be done to anyone but Allah.

Islam, a religion of tolerance

Diam’s said that she moved to Mauritius to read the Quran, and have a better understanding of Islam, discovering during her retreat, the tolerance of Islam.

When asked by her host about her views on Islam, and those who commit all the murders and atrocities pretending to be doing it in the name of religion, she answered: “I think we should differentiate between the ignorant and the knowledgeable, and the ignorant should not speak about what he doesn’t know, Islam does not allow murdering innocent victims the way we see it nowadays.”

I Found the Best of Australian Culture in Islam

My Life Before Islam :

My name is Mustafa Samuel. My ex-name is Steven.

My background is that I was actually born a Greek orthodox.

I’ve been in many Christian schools whether Catholic or Christian, Maronite or Greek Orthodox or whatever.

Growing up, I sort of had a religious background when I was younger but I guess I fell away from going to church. It didn’t really suit me. I’ve always asked questions about a lot of things. I’ve never really accepted dogma as it was presented to me. I was one of people who would always question everything including religion. I guess in the last 25 years I’ve always been searching for answers to my questions. I think I found the answer I’ve been wanting in Islam. That’s why I embraced Islam 2 years ago, in 2009 to be exact.

How I Found Islam

Throughout the nineties, I’ve been really searching for a lot of things. I moved from Sydney to Queensland because Sydney was a very bad place for me. I was actually working at a liquor store for five years and I’ve seen the worst humans you can ever imagine. This really shook my belief in humanity I guess. When I moved to Queensland I was always searching for the truth whatever it was and I was praying to the Creator to show me the truth and I would accept it. During this time, I went to the Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses and all the different congregations of Christianity to find out the truth. I could never get the concise answer that I wanted; “Why am I here? What’s the purpose of my existence?”

It wasn’t until September 11 that I had a little spark in my head. I thought “Oh, I never looked at Islam before and I don’t know anything about this religion”. I didn’t really research that any further but I thought I had a feeling that maybe the Muslims were the ones who were really practicing religion in the right way. It certainly had to make sense to me concerning why the whole world is actually engaged in war against the Muslims. I had the sense that maybe the Muslims were on the right track.

It wasn’t until 2005 that I actually went oversees to a trip with my then girlfriend. We went around the world. We went to the United States, Central America and Europe where I met my family in Greece. We spent about a week there in Greece with my family. Then on my way back home we went to Dubai before we went to Singapore and then back home. When I was in Dubai, I spent five days there. I really wanted to see the genuine Islam but I was actually disappointed because as everybody knows Dubai is not this sort of cities. There was one thing that really attracted me. I went to this museum in Dubai and there was a mosque across the road. I thought really compelled to cross the street and go to the mosque to find out about Islam. But I was in my casual wear and I looked like a typical westerner I guess. The people in the mosque were wearing local clothes. I didn’t realize it was Friday prayers. I didn’t understand that. I felt really drawn to it.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I didn’t really go to the mosque. I came back to Australia. I went in a new quest to research about Islam. In 2006, I bought my first Quran to read it. I was a very slow reader so it took me 2 years and a half to read it! I must say that as I was reading it I was shocked. I was in a state of shock. I didn’t know that Jesus (peace be upon him) was in the Quran. I didn’t know that Moses (peace be upon him) was in the Quran. I didn’t know that there were stories about Lot and Noah and Moses and other prophets. I didn’t know this all was in the Quran. When I knew it I was actually in a state of shock and I thought “Oh wow”. There was nothing in the Quran that’s onto war or hinted to the word extremism or terrorism or whatever. This really pumped my interest further. So for the next 2 or so years I researched Islam. I read the Quran once again.

It came to a stage in 2008 that I actually wanted to embrace Islam but I couldn’t find any Muslim to help me. I contacted a mosque. I sent them an email. I asked them “Can I have a copy of the Quran?” because at this stage I had my Quran in storage because I was going around quite a bit. No one would help me and I thought “Ok, maybe Allah doesn’t want me to become a Muslim”. I was actually becoming quite panicked by this.

Anyway, in 2009 I had to go back to Sydney to renovate a unit. I asked a few tailors to do that. It was strange that all the tailors in Sydney happen to be Lebanese. Anyway, there was one guy who I found to be very nice. His name was Samir. I didn’t think he was a Muslim because he had no beard and he is an apprentice. His son-in-law is called Adam and I thought those guys must be Christians. They were nice guys.

Anyway, at this stage I had already known how to do my prayers. I downloaded that from the internet so I was actually doing my prayers about a week ahead of my conversion. I had stopped drinking alcohol and eating pork by then. One day, Samir brought me a pizza and a drink. That was very hospitable for those lovely Christian people. I didn’t eat pork at this stage. So when I looked at the box and I saw salami on this pizza and I thought it was pork, I turned on to Samir and said “Is this Halal?” and he said “Yes, of course it is”. And then I said “Are you a Muslim?”, he said “Yes I’m.” I said “Oh, I want to become a Muslim.” The next day I took my shahadah. He brought me to his brother-in-law’s place and I took shahadah there. I felt very happy about that decision and I haven’t looked back since then.

Family & Friends reaction

My family reacted very positively, believe it or not! My mother was questioning me quite a bit. Initially, she was sort of negative but when I explained it to her- I actually gave her a lot of explanation and dawah- now she is really OK with it. She has seen how Islam changed me. So she is happy with that. My father had nothing to say about it. He doesn’t care either way really. He sees that I’ve become more stable, a better person I guess. Some of my distant relatives like my cousins don’t talk to me a lot now but they didn’t used to do that anyway. I’ve got the strength not to worry about that. I only care of what Allah thinks not of what people think. But in general my relationship with my family and friends was positive. One of my friends is a Christian. Considering that he is a Christian, I was actually quite nervous to tell him about my conversion. But when I did, alhamdulellah, he sort of was very happy because he understands that true Muslims and true Christians have actually a lot in common. So generally it’s a very positive experience.

How Islam Changed My Everyday Life

Islam made me more disciplined through doing the five daily prayers, performing ablution, abstaining from eating during Ramadan and abstaining from eating pork and drinking alcohol. It has changed everything. It changed the whole dynamics of my life. The end result of that is that I felt a lot more calmer, a lot less agitated, a lot less angry, a lot more balanced in my thinking, a lot more reasonable and a lot more even temporized. I had a very bad temper but now I’m very relaxed. People could actually rub me up the wrong way quite a bit and I won’t react because Islam teaches us patience. I’m very happy for embracing Islam because it’s giving me a lot of qualities that I didn’t have before.

What Islam Can Offer

There’s no conflict between becoming Muslim and living in this country because true Australian values and Islam go together. Such values include good kinship, respecting parents, being a law-abiding citizen and all such Australian values that are coincidently Islamic values as well. So there’s no conflict. When you meet people who have a negative attitude towards Islam and you sit with them and explain Islam they find that Islam is a great system to follow and there’s actually no conflict between Islam and the Australian way of life. However, the bad aspects of the Australian way of life like drinking and gambling and having loose morals are not the things we embrace in Islam. What we say to Australians is “The best of Australian culture is what we follow in Islam“.
