Duniya vs. Ahkira!
Everyday on his drive home from college, Khalil listened to the lyrics played on 101.9 to be up-to-date on today’s hip-hop world. Today was no different as Khalil enjoyed the music of P. Diddy and Jay-Z. Khalil was a normal student, he got good grades and worked hard to pay his bills. However, when it came to the deen, he was somewhat laxed. He had the mentality that when he would grow older, he would take advantage of Islam. He decided he could make his prayers up later as an adult when he would have more free time.
While driving, minding his own business, the car in-front of Khalil swerved to avoid the deer-crossing the street. Khalil was not so lucky and he hit the deer head-on and himself flying out of the wind-shield lying on the road-side. Khalil was dying when the ambulance arrived and a the police officer on the scene started telling Khalil to say the Shahada before he passed away. Khalil, fully comprehending what the police officer was telling him do, couldn’t mumble it out, not even once. Khalil was scared, he was staring into the eyes of death and he knew it was not pretty. The police officer tried one more time as Khalil slowly passed away. All Khalil mumbled before his death were the words to Jay-Z’s song, “Big Pimpin.”
Another brother, Yahya, who attended college in a neighboring town had a similar experience. However, his outcome was different. Yahya was a mediocre student in college, but he always tried his best. He took care of his widowed mother by himself and never did he ever disobey her. Yahya’s schedule was pretty much the same everyday. After praying fajr in the masjid, he would read some Quran and work on his memorization. Afterwards, he would come home and get ready for school. After school everyday, he would go back to the masjid to take lessons from the shaykh from asr until maghrib. After lessons, he would go home and do his homework. Whenever Yahya was not engrossed in his schoolwork, he would be reading a tafsir of his favorite surahs.
Later that year as Yahya was driving home from the masjid listen to Quran on the CD-player, a drunk-driver blind-sided Yahya’s car and totaled it. Yahya was hurt fairly severly. The paramedics once again arrived on scene, but it appeared again as though it was going to be too late to save Yahya. As the paramedics approached Yahya, Yahya was not in any pain, instead he was reciting Surat Waqiah of the Holy Quran! As the paramedics worked on Yahya, he slowly took his right index finger and pointed it up. He recited the Shahada slowly and then passed away.
Subhan’Allah! What an amazing ending for a youth who had embraced Islam and taken advantage of the time he had on this earth. Even though the two stories written above are just stories, they are surprising close to what happens in our real everyday lives. Why, then, can we (including myself) not take advantage of our time to love and practice this deen the way we should. We need to have a better relationship with the Quran!
Narrated in Al-Baihaqi, Rasoolullah (SAW) said: “Take advantage of five before five:
- your youth before your old age
- your health before your sickness
- your wealth before your poverty
- your free time before you become occupied
- and your life before your death”
Concerning the hereafter, the Prophet (SAW) said:
“If you could know what I know, you would laugh little and weep much” (as narrated by Anas b. Malik in a longer hadith found in Bukhari).
When we die, regardless, if we are good or bad, we would wish to come back to this life. For if we were good, we would desire to do more good and if we were bad, we would desire to repent to Allah.
“If thou couldst but see when they are confronted with the fire! They will say: “Would that we were but sent back! then would we not reject the Signs of our Lord but would be amongst those who believe!” (Translation of the Meaning of the Holy Quran, 6:27)
Therefore, insha’Allah, we all need to make a choice. Duniya versus Ahkira. What’s it going to be?

A Judgment day reminder::
Narrated Anas:
I will narrate to you a narration which nobody will narrate to you after me. I heard that form the Prophet. I heard the Prophet saying :
“The Hour sill not be established” or said: “From among the portents of the Hour is that the religious knowledge will betaken away (by the death of religious Scholars) and general ignorance (of religion) will appear; and the drinking of alcoholic drinks will be very common, and (open) illegal sexual intercourse will prevail, and men will decrease in number while women will increase so much so that, for fifty women there will only be one man to look after them.”
Get back to Allah before its too late !
