Brief description of the Islamic months (Meanings)

Islamic Months

Allah tells us in the Quran that as far as He is concerned the count of months is twelve (9:36) and that it has been that way since He created the Earth. He tells us that four of the twelve months are sacred and that we shall not wrong our souls by fighting during these Sacred Months.

The Sacred Months have been tampered with and alternated by those who do not truly follow the word of God, the Quran (9:37), the four Sacred Months are Zhul-Hijja, Muharram, Safar, and Rabi I (12th, 1st, 2nd, 3rd months of the lunar calendar).

Muharram ~ is the first month of the lunar calendar. It means ‘forbidden’. It is the second Sacred Month in which all fighting is forbidden.

Safar ~ the second month means ‘void/yellow/whistle’. It is a month known as ‘the whistling of the wind’ when the dry air blows through the sand dunes. It is the third Sacred Month when all fighting is prohibited.

Rabiul-Awwal ~ the third month of the calendar means ‘first month of spring’. It is the fourth Sacred Month in which fighting is not allowed.

Rabi-uthani ~ the fourth month means ‘second month of spring’, the month before the dry season begins in the desert.

Jumadi-ul-Awwal ~ the fifth month brings the first month of summer and means ‘first month of parched land’ when there is a lack of rain.

Jumadi-uthani ~ the sixth month which means ‘second month of parched land’.

Rajab ~ the seventh month of the calendar means ‘to respect’.

Sha’ban ~ the eighth month means ‘scattered’ when the tribes went in search of water.

Ramadan ~ the ninth month of is the month of fasting and it means ‘intense heat’. It is during this month that everyone who is able should fast from dawn until sunset.

Shawwal ~ the tenth month means ‘elevated’ when the female camels become pregnant and there is a shortage of camel milk.

Zhul-Q’ada ~ the eleventh month of the lunar calendar means ‘truce’.

Dhul-Hijja ~ the twelfth month meaning ‘pilgrimage’ is the beginning of the Hajj period when pilgrims make their way to Mecca to perform, possibly a once in a life time pilgrimage for God. It is the first Sacred Month which begins a cease to all fighting for four months.

The hajj/pilgrimage period is supposed to last for four months, but this too has been corrupted and reduced to one month of the year.

The Islamic calendar is based purely on the lunar cycle and it is not synchronized with the season of the year. It drifts each solar year by about eleven days and comes back into position with the solar cycle every thirty three years. The solar year has 365 days while the lunar year has 354 days.

The first year of the Hijrah calendar, used in countries like Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, was the year in which Mohamed emigrated from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijrah. The corresponding Gregorian date is July 15th 622 AD.

Those Who Can’t go to Mosque for Eid Prayers ?!

Firstly, Woman are encouraged to go mosque for Eid Prayers, Read detailed article by clicking here and Here

The Eid prayer is an individual obligation (fard ‘ayn) for every man who is able to do it, according to the more correct of the two scholarly opinions,

If you cannot go to the prayer because of your health, then you do not have to do anything. But is it prescribed to do it at home? There is a difference of opinion among the fuqaha’ concerning that, but the majority are of the view that that is prescribed, unlike the Hanafis.

Al-Muzni narrated from al-Shaafa’i (may Allah have mercy on him) in Mukhtasar al-Umm (8/125): He may offer the Eid prayer on his own in his house, as may the traveller, the slave and the woman. End quote.

Al-Kharashi (Maaliki) said: It is mustahabb for the one who has missed the Eid prayer with the imam to offer this prayer, but should he do it in congregation or separately? There are two opinions. End quote from Sharh al-Kharashi (2/104).

Al-Mardaawi said in al-Insaaf (Hanbali): If he has missed the prayer (meaning the Eid prayer), it is mustahabb to him to make it up in the same manner (i.e., as the imam prayed it). End quote.

Ibn Qudaamah said in al-Mughni (Hanbali): He has the choice: if he wishes he may pray it on his own, and if he wishes he may pray it in congregation. End quote.

In al-Durr al-Mukhtaar ma’a Haashiyat Ibn ‘Aabideen (2/175 – Hanafi) it says: He should not pray it on his own if he has missed it with the imam. End quote.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah favoured the Hanafi view, and it was also regarded as more correct by Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him), as it says in al-Sharh al-Mumti’ (5/156).

In Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah li’l-Iftaa (8/306) it says: Eid prayer is a communal obligation (fard kifaayah): if it is undertaken by enough people, the sin of not doing it is waived from the rest.

If a person misses it and wants to make it up, it is mustahabb for him to do that, so he should pray it in the proper manner but without a khutbah following it. This is the view of Imam Maalik, al-Shaafa’i, Ahmad, al-Nakha’i and other scholars. The basic principle concerning that is the words of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him): “If you come to the prayer then come walking, calmly and with dignity. Whatever you catch up with, pray, and whatever you miss, make it up.” And it was narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that if he missed the Eid prayer with the imam, he would gather together his family and freed slaves, then his freed slave ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Abi ‘Utbah would stand up and lead them in praying two rak’ahs, saying the takbeers in them. If a person arrives on the day of Eid when the imam is delivering the khutbah, he should listen to the khutbah, then make up the prayer after that, so that he may combine both benefits. And Allah is the source of strength. May Allah send blessings and peace upon Prophet Muhammad and his family and Companions. End quote.

Farewell O Ramadhaan ! Short Beautiful Poem !

As you take leave of us, we sadly say:
“Farewell 0 month of Ramadan.”

As you take leave of us, we sadly say:
“Farewell 0 month of Kindness.”

As you take leave of us, we sadly say:
“Farewell 0 month of High status.”

As you take leave of us, we sadly say:
“Farewell 0 month of Salvation.”

As you take leave of us, we sadly say:
“Farewell 0 month of Divine Integrity.”

When this month of fasting arrives, all
true believers become ecstatic.

They all say in one voice: “We shall all
enjoy worshipping our Creator Most High
with consistency.”

The true believers are overjoyed at the
arrival of this month, their hearts
becoming filled with the invocation of the
Almighty’s name.

They free themselves from wrongful
innovations and infidelity.

You are on your way and they all profess
their sadness.

Oh! Alas! How negligent we have been. Oh
woe unto us! We have lost forever, the
benefits of this auspicious month.

Alas! Alas! We have been blessed to meet
with you, 0 month of Divine Light, after an
entire year. Every heart is abounding in the
remembrance of the Creator, Most High.

Day in and day out, Divine Light descends
on us in the days of your visit. Because of
you, the true believers were joyous
continuously. You are now taking leave,
and they are all feeling a sense of grief.

Oh illuminating month, you are truly a
month full of strange bounties.
The Creator Most High is pleased with the
true believers.

You are making every heart your captive.
Loving you is an experience on its own.
How is it at all possible for us to calculate
your status?

You have brought the pleasure of the
Almighty Creator on us.

The sounds of Taraawih could be heard everywhere.
We were avid in our worship day and
night.

You were so full of strange bounties, O
month of good qualities.

Every true believer’s heart, La’l, was alive
because of you dear month of Ramadan.

Why should we not lament your departure?

May the Creator Most High show us your grace again, quickly.
