Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him): A Role Model for a New Millennium
The human need for role models
Have you ever heard of Moses, Jesus, Confucius, Krishna or the Buddha? How about Gandhi, Mother Theresa or Martin Luther King? If you live in the West, there’s a good chance that you know a bit about these people and their accomplishments. In man’s eternal search for immortality and meaning, many leaders and heroes, both true and false, have made their appearance on the world stage. The respect and reverence shown to such figures among people of every nationality, in every age, points to a deep human need to believe in someone greater than oneself, in an attempt to transcend the confines of one’s own limited existence. We see this theme recur in world myths, legends, hero stories, and in the idealisation of people who have been raised by their followers to superhuman or godly status.
Most educated people today are sceptics, and view such stories as the charming remnants of a simpler age. And with globalisation and the steady stream of new religions and ideologies that people are exposed to, it may be hard to know what to believe. Some find it easier to ignore spiritual questions altogether, focusing instead on their relationships, careers and ‘getting ahead’. Yet we know that excessive materialism stifles the mind and spirit; despite technological advances, the deep yearning to believe in a Higher Power, true leadership, and an ultimate purpose in life remains. In this day and age, who can be trusted as a guide in both spiritual and worldly matters?
There is one leader, still largely unknown to the West, who is an extraordinary role model that people of all backgrounds can relate to: the Prophet Muhammad. The details of Muhammad’s remarkable life have been carefully preserved and have been subjected to the scrutiny of historians, east and west. In contrast to others who have achieved renown for their accomplishments in a limited sphere of activity, Muhammad’s achievements span all major areas of life. The historian Michael H. Hart wrote:
My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world’s most influential persons may surprise some readers and be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular levels. Why does the average European or American know so little about a man whose life was so exceptional? Irrational fears and negative propaganda, dating back to the Crusades and exaggerated by the media, have created a ‘mental block’ for many people against all things Arab or Islamic, and the two terms are often mistakenly confused. As we enter the age of the global village, is it not time for those who pride themselves on being unprejudiced, independent thinkers to put aside these mental relics from a bygone era? We invite you to take a few minutes to explore a new understanding of religious leadership, and in so doing, to catch a glimpse of a man who is loved by one-fifth of the people on this planet.
The concept of prophethood in Islam
For a Muslim, a Prophet does not primarily imply someone able to foretell the future – although most of Muhammad’s predictions have already been fulfilled in astonishing ways – but a man sent by God to call people to repent, have faith, and dedicate their lives to doing good, thereby helping them rediscover the purpose for which they were created. Prophets are not considered to be Divine, and are not prayed to or worshipped – though they were men of outstanding character and spirituality who were protected from committing sins, performed miracles, received revelation and communed with God. Islam teaches that God is One, without partner or associate; no human being can share in any of the qualities that are unique to the Intelligent Creator and Sustainer of our vast and complex universe. Muhammad was no more than God’s honoured servant and Messenger, yet he embodied the best of human potential, and that is what continues to make him so appealing and accessible today. Last in a line of Prophets and Messengers sent by God to all people on earth – including Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus – who effected the large-scale transformation of individuals and society, Muhammad was unsurpassed as teacher and guide. Speaking of his own role as the last true Prophet before Judgement Day, he said:
‘The parable of me in relation to the Prophets who came before me is that of a man who built a house beautifully and well, except that one brick in its corner was missing. The people went around it and wondered at its beauty, but said: “If only that brick were put in its place!” I am that brick, and I am the last of the Prophets.’
Muhammad’s personal life
Muhammad was born in 570 AD to a noble family of Makkah, and was a descendant of the Prophet Abraham. Orphaned at six, Muhammad was a thoughtful youth who worked as a shepherd and helped his uncle with the trade caravans. As a teenager he rejected the immoral customs of his people, who had become steeped in idolatry, and joined a chivalrous order, earning the nickname ‘The Trustworthy’. At age 25 he found employment with a wealthy widow of 40 named Khadijah, managing her business. Impressed by his honesty and character, Khadijah proposed marriage and he accepted. Despite their age difference, they were happily married for 25 years, and were blessed with six children. After Khadijah’s death Muhammad married several women for political and humanitarian reasons, as was expected of a man of his position; all but one were widows and divorcees. He was a loving and considerate husband and father, and his family was devoted to him despite his voluntary poverty, for he put into practice his own advice, ‘the best of you is the one who is best to his own family.’
Muhammad, the Prophet
Muhammad received his first revelation from God at 40, through the Angel Gabriel. He continued to receive revelations for 23 years, on topics ranging from the Oneness of God and His wondrous handiwork, to stories of earlier prophets, morality and ethics, and life after death. These revelations became collectively known as the Qur’an, and are considered by Muslims to be the literal word of God; the Prophet’s own words were collected separately. Muhammad’s call to monotheism and social reform was heavily opposed by the Makkan elite; after enduring thirteen years of intense persecution, he and his followers were invited to relocate to Madinah, a town to the north that had been torn apart by generations of intertribal warfare. Muhammad successfully settled their differences and forged a bond of brotherhood between the two warring factions, as well as between the locals and the new emigrants. For Arab tribal society, this was an amazing accomplishment. The early Muslims learned to implement the golden rule under the Prophet’s tutelage: ‘No one truly believes until he desires for his brother what he desires for himself.’
Muhammad’s legacy: the Madinan model
For Muhammad, religion was not a matter of personal conviction alone but a complete way of life, and Madinah flourished under his leadership. The Madinan model of government, based on justice, respect for human dignity and God-consciousness, became the template to which Muslims have looked for guidance and inspiration ever since. The Prophet drew up the world’s first constitution in which the rights of religious minorities were protected, and entered into treaties and alliances with neighbouring tribes. He sent letters to the rulers of the Persians, Egyptians, Abyssinians and Byzantines, announcing his message of pure monotheism and inviting them to accept Islam. For the first time in history, women, children, orphans, foreigners and slaves were granted extensive rights and protection. Many of the Prophet’s concerns seem surprisingly ‘modern’: he condemned racism and nationalism, saying ‘there is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, or a white man over a black man, except in righteousness.’ He established laws protecting animals, trees and the environment. He encouraged free trade and ethical investments, but secured workers’ rights and forbade usury. He worked for peace, but defined the parameters of the judicious use of force, when force was needed. He convinced people to give up alcohol, drugs, prostitution and crime, and promoted healthy living. He condemned domestic violence, encouraged his wives to speak their own mind, and granted Muslim women many rights not dreamed of in Europe until centuries later, including the right to own property, reject arranged marriages, and seek divorce because of incompatibility. And the Prophet encouraged his followers to seek beneficial knowledge wherever it could be found, with the result that Muslims never experienced a conflict between science and religion, and led the world in many fields of learning for centuries afterwards. Although his enduring legacy can be observed in everything from art to politics, Muhammad’s greatest achievement by far was to re-establish pure monotheism. As simple and straightforward to understand as the nucleus at the centre of an atom, the concept of One God lies at the heart of Islamic culture. Muslims turn to their Creator for guidance, without the need for intermediaries, or the loss of dignity that idolatry and superstition bring.
The Prophet accomplished all this through the strength of his character and personal example; he inspired in his followers a love, devotion and sense of awe that was unparalleled. While other men would have been corrupted by the absolute power that he wielded in his later years, Muhammad remained humble, ever aware of the Source of his blessings. ‘I am just God’s servant,’ he said, and ‘I have only been sent as a teacher.’ Although he spent his days in serving people and his nights in prayer, he preached religious moderation and balance; he forbade his followers to adopt a monastic lifestyle and preferred that they establish strong families and engage themselves in bettering the world around them, while remaining deeply conscious of God.
In the brief space of one generation and during his own lifetime, the Prophet Muhammad* successfully transformed the faith, mentality and culture of the people of Arabia; within 100 years his message had touched the hearts and lives of millions in Africa, Asia and parts of Europe. The Prophet foretold that each succeeding generation would be worse than the one before it, and true to his prediction, Muslims have not always understood or honoured his example. But Muhammad’s teachings, speeches and customs were carefully noted down by his Companions, and compiled into books of authentic sayings which are available in translation. Along with the Qur’an, they form the holistic foundation of a satisfying way of life for practising Muslims, while for others, they provide a fascinating glimpse into the heart and mind of an exceptional man and role model from whom much can be learned.

I don’t think so I have to tell you the imporatanse of this Month. Ramadan … The Month of Mercy from Allah.

Prophet Muhammad pbuh behaviour with non-muslims
Ex. No. (1)
It was narrated that ‘Aisha, May Allah be pleased with her, said to the Prophet, Peace be upon him: “Have you ever come across a day harder than the day of Uhod (one of the battles with the polytheists, in which Muslims were defeated failing to comply with the Prophet’s instructions)?” He replied: “I have suffered from your people a lot. The hardest I suffered was on the day of Akaba (a place name). I brought out my message to Abd Yaleil bin Abd Kalal. He did not respond positively to what I called him for. I left there with a grief-stricken face. I did not wake up from that feeling, until I was near Karn-Ath-Tha-aleb (a place name). I raised my head, where I found a cloud casting its shadow over me. Upon looking, I saw Jibril (the angel) into it. He called upon me: Allah (the Almighty) has heard the saying of your people, and what kind of reply they gave to you. Allah has sent the angel of the mountains for you ready to do with them whatever you ask. The angel of the mountains called, and saluted me saying: “Oh Muhammad, what I do will be as you request. If you want, I close the two mountains on them?” The Prophet, Peace be upon him, replied: “Instead of that, I am hoping that Allah (the Al mighty) will create from their offspring people who worship Allah alone, without ascribing partners unto Him” narrated by Al Bukhari.
Ex. No. (2):
It was narrated that Ibn-Omar (the son of Omar), May Allah be pleased with both of them, said that after one of the battles of the Prophet PBUH, a woman was found killed. In response, the Prophet PBUH denied the killing of women and children. Narrated by Al Bukhari.
Ex. No. (3):
Anas-bin-Malek, May Allah be pleased with him, said:
A Jewish youth who served the Prophet, Peace be upon him, became ill, and the Prophet paid him a visit. The Prophet, peace be upon him, sat near the youth’s head, and he spoke to him saying: “Embrace Islam”. The youth averted his eyes towards his father, who was also beside him. The father told his son: “Obey Abal-Kassem (one of the common names of the Prophet PBUH)”. The youth embraced Islam (before dying), and the Prophet, peace be upon him, went out saying: “Thanks to Allah (the Almighty) Who rescued him from hellfire.” narrated by Al Bukhari.
Ex. No. (4):
Abdullah Ibn-Amr, May Allah be pleased with both, reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
“He who kills a promisor (a non-Muslim living among Muslims where he is promised to have protection, and he promises not to help enemies against Muslims, hence, he is called ‘a promisor’), will not smell the fragrance of paradise, though its fragrance is recognizable from a distance of forty years.” narrated by Al Bukhari.
Ex. No. (5):
Boraida-bin-Al-Hosaib reported that when the Prophet, peace be upon him, delegated a prince to lead an army or a small army, he advised him, and Muslims with him, to be devoted to Allah, and to act to the common good. Then, he said: “Your battle should be in the name of Allah, and for His sake. Fight disbelievers. Fight, but don’t exaggerate, don’t cheat, don’t mutilate, don’t kill a new-born child. If you meet your enemies of polytheists call them for one of three options. Whatever they take, you must accept, and stop fighting them. Call them to Islam. If they take it, accept, and stop fighting them. Then call them to transfer from their home to the home of immigrants (Al Madina, or Hijra house, where all Muslims, at the start of Islam gathered). Tell them if they do so, they will have the same rights and duties of the immigrants. If, however, their choice was not to transfer from home, their status will be the same as the Muslim Bedouins (away in the desert), by the command of Allah not having the right for spoils or almsgiving unless they join holy war (Jihad) beside other Muslims. If they refused (Islam) ask them to pay the tribute (tax taken from non-Muslims for protection). If they gave a positive reply, accept that, and stop fighting them. If they refused, seek the help of Allah, and fight them. If you lay a siege around a fortress, and they ask to have the warranty of Allah and the warranty of his Messenger, do not give them the warranty of Allah and the warranty of his Messenger. But give them your warranty and the warranty of your companions. Observing your warranty and the warranty of your companions will be easier than observing the warranty of Allah and the warranty of his Messenger. If you lay a siege around a fortress, and its people ask to be brought down to the judgement of Allah, don’t bring them down to the judgement of Allah. But, bring them down to your own judgement, since; you never know whether your judgement will be the same as the right judgement of Allah about them or not.” narrated by Muslim.
Ex. No. (6):
Abu Huraira, May Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, Peace be upon him, delegated some horsemen to a place called Najd. The horsemen captured a man from the tribe of Bani-Hanifa called Thomama-bin-Athal. They tied the captive to one of the posts in the mosque. The Prophet, Peace be upon him, came out to him saying: “How do you find yourself Thomama?” Thomama replied: “Good, Muhammad. If you kill me, you shed (retaliatory) blood. If you pardon me, you do a favour to an appreciative person. If you are seeking money, ask whatever amount you want.” He was left until the next day. The Prophet, Peace be upon him, asked him the same question (the next day), and he replied “The same like yesterday, if you pardon me, you do a favour to an appreciative person”. The Third day, The Prophet, Peace be upon him, asked him the same question, and the captive gave the same reply. The Prophet, Peace be upon him, said” “Set Thomama free!”. Thomama went to a place near the mosque where he washed (did ablution; Wudu’), and came back to the mosque giving the testimony “I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”. Then, he added: “I swear by Allah, that on earth no face was more hateful to me than your face. Now, your face is the one I love most. I swear by Allah, your religion was the one I disliked most. Now, it is the religion I like most. I swear by Allah, your city was the worst place for me. Now, it is your city which I like most. Your horsemen took me, when I was going for Omra (a smaller pilgrimage out of the normal time of Haj that was also practiced by polytheists before Islam imitating the monotheist religion of Abraham, PBUH). So, what is your decision?” The Prophet, Peace be upon him, harbingered him, and permitted him to go for Omra. When he went to Makkah, somebody there said to him: “You have changed your religion!” (a shameful accusation for them) “No.” he replied, “But I joined Islam with Muhammad, Peace be upon him. From now on, you will not receive even one grain of wheat from (my land) Al-Yamama, unless by the permission of the Prophet, Peace be upon him.” narrated by Al Bukhari.
Ex. No. (7):
Khalid-bin-Al-Walid, May Allah be pleased with him, said: “I joined the Prophet, Peace be upon him, at the battle of Kheibar, where the Jews came complaining that people were harrying to their warehouses.” (In response), the Prophet, Peace be upon him, said: “The possessions of promisors are not permissible unless by a rightful claim”. Narrated by Abu-Dawood with a sound reference.
Ex. No. (8):
Sahel-bin-Saad-As-Sa’edi, May Allah be pleased with him, reported that he heard the Prophet, Peace be upon him, saying on the day of Kheibar battle:
“I will give the flag to a man that Allah brings victory through him” The companions stood up to see which of them will be given the flag. Then, he said: “Where is Ali?” He was given the answer that Ali, May Allah be pleased with him, was suffering from pain in his eyes. He called Ali, supplicated Allah (the Almighty) for Ali’s cure, spitting in Ali’s eyes. Ali was cured on the spot, as if he suffered no pain. Ali, May Allah be pleased with him, said: “We fight them until they are (Muslims) like us”? The Prophet, Peace be upon him, replied “Wait until you are on their land. Then, call them to Islam, and tell them their duties, I swear, that if Allah guided even a single man through you, will be better for you than getting the most expensive livestock.” narrated by Al Bukhari, and Muslim.
Ex. No. (9):
It was reported that Abu Huraira, May Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet, Peace be upon him, was asked to invoke Allah (the Almighty) against polytheists. He replied: “I was not sent out for cursing, I was sent out as a mercy” narrated by Muslim.
Ex. No. (10):
It was reported that Abu Huraira, May Allah be pleased with him, said: “I called my mother for Islam, when she was still a polytheist. One day, upon calling her, she said to me words about the Prophet, Peace be upon him that I hate. I went to the Prophet, Peace be upon him, crying. I said: “Messenger of Allah! I was calling my mother to Islam, but she was refusing. Today, I called her, but she said to me words about you that I hate. Supplicate that Allah (the Almighty) guide mother of Abu Huraira to Islam”. At that the Prophet, Peace be upon him, said: “Oh Allah! I call upon you to guide the mother of Abu Huraira”. I went out very happy at the supplication of the Prophet, Peace be upon him. Going back home, when I was near the door, my mother heard my steps. “Stay where you are Abu Huraira!” she shouted. I heard the sound of pouring water. Then, after washing, dressing, and putting on her veil, she opened the door, and said: “Abu Huraira, I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad (PBUH) is His Slave and His Messenger” I went back to of the Prophet, Peace be upon him, crying this time out of joy, and I said to him: “Oh Messenger of Allah! I have the good news that Allah (the Almighty) responded to your supplication, and guided the mother of Abu Huraira”. The Prophet, Peace be upon him, thanked Allah, and praised Him, and said good words. Then, I said: “Oh, Messenger of Allah! Supplicate Allah that His slaves and believers love both me and my mother, and make us love believers. The Prophet, Peace be upon him, said: “Oh Allah! I call upon you to make this little slave of you – he means Abu Huraira – and his mother, beloved to your slaves and believers, and make your slaves and believers beloved to them.” No believer on earth who heard of me or saw me, but he loved me” narrated by Muslim.
Ex. No. (11):
It was reported that Abu Huraira, May Allah be pleased with him, said: “Tofail-bin-Amr-Ad-Dawsi and his companions, came to the Prophet, Peace be upon him, and said: “Messenger of Allah! Daws (a tribe name) disobeyed and revolted against us, invoke Allah (the Almighty) against them. Thinking that the Prophet PBUH would do that, people said: “Aws has perished”. The Prophet, Peace be upon him, said: “Oh Allah! I call upon you to favour Awas with your guidance, and bring them. Narrated by Bukhary
Ex. No. (12):
It was reported that Jabir-bin-Abdullah, May Allah be pleased with both of them said: “Oh! “Messenger of Allah, we have been hit severely by the fire arrows of Thakif (a tribe name), invoke Allah (the Almighty) against them. The Prophet, Peace be upon him, said: “Oh Allah! I call upon you to favour Thakif with your guidance” narrated by Al-Tirmizi with a sound reference.

Muslims worship Muhammad, Whom do they Worship???
According to Islamic belief, the Prophet Muhammad was the last Messenger of God. He, like all of God’s prophets and messengers – such as Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus — was only a human being. Christians came to the mistaken assumption that Muslims worship Muhammad by formulating an incorrect analogy – they worship Jesus so they assumed Muslims worship Muhammad. This is one of the reasons that they called Muslims by the incorrect name “Mohammedans” for so many years!
Muhammad, like Jesus, never claimed divine status. He called people to worship only Almighty God, and he continually emphasized his humanity so that people would not fall into the same errors as Christians did in regards to Jesus. In order to prevent his deification, the Prophet Muhammad always said to refer to him as “the Messenger of God and His slave”.
Muhammad was chosen to be God’s final messenger — to communicate the message not only in words but to be a living example of the message. Muslims love and respect him because he was of the highest moral character and he brought the Truth from God – which is the Pure Monotheism of Islam. Even when Islam was in its very early stages, God revealed that Muhammad “was sent as a mercy to all of mankind” – thus informing us that the message of Islam would become very widespread.
Muslims strive to follow the great example of Muhammad, peace be upon him, but they do not worship him in any way. Additionally, Islam teaches Muslims to respect all of God’s prophets and messengers – but respecting and loving them does not mean worshipping them. All true Muslims realize that all worship and prayer must be directed to Almighty God alone. Suffice it to say that worshipping Muhammad — or anyone else — along with Almighty God is considered to be the worst sin in Islam. Even if a person claims to be Muslim, but they worship and pray to other than Almighty God, this cancels and nullifies their Islam. The Declaration of Faith of Islam makes it clear that Muslims are taught only to worship God. This declaration is as follows:
“There is nothing divine or worthy of being worshipped except for Almighty God, and Muhammad is the Messenger and Servant of God”
Who do the Muslims worship actually? – the answer is to be found in the Holy Qur’aan, which is the Scripture of Islam, and in the words of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) who received Revelation from his Lord.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“In the name of Allaah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. All praises and thanks be to Allaah, the Lord of the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinns and all that exists), the Most Beneficient, the Most Merciful, the Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e., the Day of Resurrection). You (Alone) we worship, and You (alone) we ask for help (for each and every thing).” [al-Faatihah 1:1-5]
“O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allaah), Who has created you and those before you so that you may become al-muttaqoon (the pious).” [al-Baqarah 2:21]
“Such is Allaah, your Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Creator of all things. So worship Him (Alone), and He is the Wakeel (Trustee, Disposer of affairs, Guardian) over all things.”[al-An’aam 6:102]
“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.” [al-Isra’ 17:23]
Muslim worship Allaah [the One True God] whom all the Prophets worshipped. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Or were you witnesses when death approached Ya’qoob [Jacob]? When he said unto his sons, ‘What will you worship after me?’ They said, ‘We shall worship your God, the God of your fathers, Ibraaheem [Abraham], Ismaa’eel [Ishmael] and Is-haaq [Isaac], One God, and to Him we submit (in Islam).” [al-Baqarah 2:133]
The Muslims worship Allaah and call others who follow different religions to worship Allaah Alone, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Say [O Muhammad]: ‘O People of the Scripture [Jews and Christians]: come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allaah, and we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allaah.’ Then, if they turn away, say, ‘Bear witness that we are Muslims.’” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:64]
It is Allaah Alone Whom Nooh [Noah] (peace be upon him) called his people to worship, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Indeed, We sent Nooh [Noah] to his people and he said: ‘O my people! Worship Allaah! You have no other god but Him. Certainly, I fear for you the torment of a Great Day!.’” [al-A’raaf 7:59]
It is Allaah Alone whom the Messiah [Jesus] (peace be upon him) called people to worship, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Surely they have disbelieved who say: ‘Allaah is the Messiah [Jesus] son of Maryam [Mary].’ But the Messiah said: ‘O Children of Israel! Worship Allaah, my Lord and your Lord.’ Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allaah, then Allaah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the zaalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doers) there are no helpers.” [al-Maa’idah 5:73]
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And (remember) when Allaah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): ‘O ‘Eesa [Jesus], son of Maryam [Mary]! Did you say unto men: ‘Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allaah?’ He will say: ‘Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it. You know what is in my inner-self though I do not know what is in Yours. You, only You, are the All-Knower of all that is hidden and unseen.
Never did I say to them aught except what You (Allaah) did command me to say: “Worship Allaah, my Lord and your Lord.” And I was a witness over them while I dwelt amongst them, but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them, and You are a Witness to all things.’”[al-Maa’idah 5:116-117]
When Allaah spoke to His Prophet Moosa [Moses] (peace be upon him), He said (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, I am Allaah! None has the right to be worshipped but I, so worship Me, and perform al-Salaah [prayer] for My Remembrance.” [Ta-Ha 20:14]
Allaah commanded His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as follows (interpretation of the meaning):
“Say [O Muhammad]: ‘O mankind! If you are in doubt as to my religion (Islam), then (know that) I will never worship those whom you worship, besides Allaah. But I worship Allaah Who causes you to die, I am commanded to be one of the believers.” [Yoonus 10:104]
It is Him Alone, with no partner or associate, Whom the angels worship and do not worship anyone or anything besides Him, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“To Him belongs whosoever is in the heavens and on earth. And those who are near Him (i.e., the angels) are not too proud to worship Him, nor are they weary (of His worship).”[al-Anbiya’ 21:19]
Everything that is worshipped instead of Allaah can neither bring benefit nor cause harm, it can neither create nor provide. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Say (O Muhammad, to mankind); ‘How do you worship besides Allaah something which has no power either to harm or to benefit you? But it is Allaah Who is the All-Hearer, All-Knower.’” [al-Maa’idah 5:76]
“You worship besides Allaah only idols, and you only invent falsehood. Verily, those whom you worship besides Allaah have no power to give you provision, so seek your provision from Allaah (Alone), and worship Him (Alone), and be grateful to Him. To Him (Alone) you will be brought back.” [al-‘Ankaboot 29:17]
Having explained this, we must complete the topic by asking: why should we worship Allaah Alone with no partner or associate? The answer is as follows:
Firstly: because there is nothing and nobody else in the universe that deserves to be worshipped, for Allaah is the Creator and Sustainer, Who has created the universe out of nothing and has bestowed so many blessings upon us. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“So glorify Allaah, when you come up to the evening [i.e., offer the Maghrib (sunset) and ‘Isha’ (night) prayers], and when you enter the morning [I.e., offer the Fajr (morning) prayers].
And His is all the praise and thanks in the heavens and the earth, and (glorify Him) in the afternoon [i.e., offer ‘Asr (mid-afternoon) prayer] and when you come up to the time when the day begins to decline [i.e., offer the Zuhr (mid-day) prayer].
He brings out the living from the dead, and brings out the dead from the living. And He revives the earth after its death, and thus shall you be brought out (resurrected).
And among His Signs is this, that He created you (Adam) from dust, and then [Hawwa (Eve) from Adam’s rib, then his offspring from the semen, and], – behold you are human beings scattered!
And among His Signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find repose in them, and He has put between you affection and mercy. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who reflect.
And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of your languages and colours. Verily in that are indeed signs for men of sound knowledge.
And among His Signs is the sleep that you take by night and by day, and your seeking of His Bounty. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who listen.
And among His Signs is that He shows you the lightning, by way of fear and hope, and He sends down water (rain) from the sky, and therewith revives the earth after its death. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who understand.
And among His Signs is that the heaven and the earth stand by His Command, then afterwards when He will call you by single call, behold, you will come out from the earth (ie.e, from your graves, for reckoning and recompense).
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. All are obedient to Him.
And He it is Who originates the creation, then will repeat it (after it has perished), and this is easier for Him. His is the highest description (i.e., none has the right to be worshipped but He, and there is nothing comparable unto Him) in the heavens and in the earth. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” [al-Room 30: 17-27]
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Is not He (better than your gods) Who created the heavens and the earth, and sends down for you water (rain) from the sky, whereby We cause to grow wonderful gardens full of beauty and delight? It is not in your ability to cause the growth of their trees. Is there any god with Allaah? Nay, but they are a people who ascribe equals (to Him)!
Is not he (better than you gods) Who has made the earth as a fixed abode, and has placed rivers in its midst, and has placed firm mountains therein, and has set a barrier between the two seas (of salt and sweet water). Is there any god with Allaah? Nay, but most of them know not.
Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one, when He calls Him, and Who removes the evil, generations after generations. Is there any god with Allaah? Little is it that you remember!
Is not He (better than your gods) Who guides you in the darkness of the land and the sea, and Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His mercy (rain)? Is there any god with Allaah? High Exalted be Allaah above all that they associate as partners (to Him)!
Is not He (better than your so-called gods) Who originates creation, and shall thereafter repeat it, and Who provides for you from heaven and earth? Is there any god with Allaah? Say: ‘bring forth your proofs, if you are truthful’
Say: ‘None on the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Allaah, nor can they perceive when they shall be resurrected.’” [al-Naml 27:60-65]
So is there anyone or anything besides Allaah that deserves to be worshipped?
Secondly: Allaah did not create us except to worship Him, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And I (Allaah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).”[al-Dhaariyaat 51:56]
Thirdly: No one will be saved on the Day of Resurrection except those who used to worship Allaah truly and sincerely. After death Allaah will resurrect His slaves and call them to account, rewarding or punishing them according to their deeds. No one will be saved on that day except for those who used to worship Allaah Alone. The rest will be gathered into a Hell, a terrible fate! The Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), was asked by his Companions: “Will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?” He told them:
“Do you doubt that you can see the sun and the moon when the sky is clear?” We [his Companions] said, “No.” He said, “Then you should not doubt that you will see your Lord on that Day, you will see Him as you see them (the sun and moon).” Then he said,
“A caller will call out, ‘Let every people go to that which they used to worship.’ So the worshippers of the cross will go with their cross, the worshippers of idols will go with their idols and the worshippers of every god will go with their gods, until there will be left those who used to worship Allaah, whether they were righteous or otherwise, and a few of the People of the Book [Jews and Christians]. Then Hell will be brought and shown to them as if it is a mirage. It will be said to the Jews,
‘What did you used to worship?’ They will say, ‘We used to worship ‘Uzayr, the son of God.’ It will be said, ‘You have lied. Allaah does not have a wife or son. What do you want?’ They will say, ‘We want something to drink.’ It will be said to them, ‘Drink!’ and they will fall into Hell. Then it will be said to the Christians, ‘What did you used to worship?’ They will say, ‘We used to worship the Messiah, the son of God.’ It will be said, ‘You have lied. Allaah does not have a wife or son. What do you want?’ They will say, ‘We want something to drink.’ It will be said to them, ‘Drink!’ and they will fall into Hell. Then there will be left those who used to worship Allaah, whether they were righteous or otherwise. It will be said to them, ‘What are you waiting for? All the people have gone.’ They will say, ‘We have separated from them and we need Him more today. We heard a caller saying that every people should follow that which they used to worship, so we are waiting for our Lord.’ He will say, ‘Al-Jabbaar [the Compeller, i.e., Allaah] will come…’ And He will say, ‘I am your Lord.’ They will say, ‘You are our Lord,’ but none will speak to Him except the Prophets… then every believer will prostrate to Him.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, no. 6886). These believers are the people of Paradise on whom shall be no fear neither shall they grieve, and they will dwell therein for ever.
We hope that this matter has now become clear. In conclusion we can say nothing except that which Allaah has said (interpretation of the meaning):
“Whoever goes right, then he goes right only for the benefit of his ownself. And whoever goes stray, then he goes astray to his own loss…” [al-Isra’ 17:15]

Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him – A to Z
Considering the qualities and teachings of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, testified to by some many people throughout history and even testified to by Allah Himself, we conclude the following to be only a partial list of the qualities, morals and virtures of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.
A. Articulate – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, although unable to read or write throughout his entire life, was able to express himself in clear and decisive terms and in the best of classical Arabic language.
B. Brave – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was praised for his courage and bravery during and after his life by his followers and opponents alike. He has always been an inspiration to Muslims and even non-Muslims throughout the centuries.
C. Courteous – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, always put other people’s feelings ahead of his own and was the most courteous of hosts and the best of guests wherever he went.
D. Dedicated – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was determined to carry out his mission and present the message with which he had been sent, to the entire world.
E. Eloquent – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, claimed he was not a poet, yet he could express himself in the most concise manner, using the least amount of words in a most classic manner. His words are still quoted by millions of Muslims and non-Muslims today everywhere.
F. Friendly – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was noted for being the most friendly and considerate of all who knew him.
G. Generous – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was most generous with his possessions and never wanted to keep anything if there was anyone who was in need. This was true of gold, silver, animals and even food and drink.
H. Hospitable – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was indeed, noted to be the most gracious of hosts and taught his companions and followers to be the best of hosts to all their guests as a part of their religion.
I. Intelligent – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, has been proclaimed by many commentators who have studied his life and actions, to be of the most intelligent of all men who ever lived.
J. Just – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was most fair and just in all of his dealings. Whether in business or in giving judgment in any matter, he practiced justice on all levels.
K. Kindness – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was kind and considerate to everyone he met. He tired his best to present the message of worship of the Creator instead of the creations to all he met in the kindest fashion and most considerate manner.
L. Loving – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most loving toward Allah and to his family members, friends, companions and even those who did not accept his message but remained peaceful to him and his followers.
M. Messenger of Mercy – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is proclaimed in the Quran by Allah, as being sent to the entire world as the “Mercy to all mankind and jinn.”
N. Noble – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most noble and distinguished of all men. Everyone knew of his fine character and honorable background.
O. “Oneness” – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is most famous for his proclamation of the “Oneness of Allah” or monotheism (called “Tawheed” in Arabic).
P. Patient – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most steadfast and forbearing in all of the trials and tests he lived through.
Q. Quiet – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was often very quiet and never was heard to be boastful, loud or obnoxious on any occasion.
R. Resourceful – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was most clever and resourceful in handling even the most serious of difficulties and problems confronting him and his companions.
S. Straightforward – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was known by all to speak directly to a subject and not twist things around in his speech. He also used a minimal amount of verbiage and considered excessive talk to be vain and unproductive.
T. Tactful – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most delicate and tactful in his dealings with the people. He never scratched the dignity of someone, even though unbelievers often insulted him and maligned him.
U. Unmatched – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is known throughout the world today as the man who most influenced the lives of so many people during his own time and for all times to come.
V. Valiant – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, gave new meaning to the word valiant and he was always most honorable in all of his affairs, whether defending the rights of orphans or preserving the honor of widows or fighting for those in distress. He was not intimidated when outnumbered in battle, nor did he turn away from his duties in protecting and defending the truth and freedom.
W. Wali – The Arabic word, “wali” (plural is owliya)is a bit difficult to bring into English without some explanation. For this reason I decided to leave it in Arabic and offer from my humble understanding one of the most important aspects of the character and personality of the prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. Some say the word means;“protectors” and others have said “darlings” or “those in whom you put full trust and confide everything” like the Catholics might do with their priests. While still others simply offered the word “friends.” While discussing this subject with one of my beloved teachers, Salim Morgan, he mentioned to me the meaning might be closer to the English word, “ally.”This is perhaps, a lot closer in meaning because when a person gives their pledge of allegiance to someone he or she is taking that person as a “wally” and this is called giving“bay’ah” in Arabic. Allah tells us the Quran not to take the Jews and Christians as “owliya” in place of Allah. While we understand the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) are the closest to us in faith, at the same time we are instructed here not to take anyone as our “confessor” or “intimate ally” or “one to whom we give our pledge of allegiance” in place of Allah or His messenger, Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. The prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was the living example of the most trustworthy and loyal of all human beings who ever lived on this earth. Anything mentioned to him in confidence would never be divulged nor shared with others. And when he was put in place of authority or “wali” over the people, they found him to be the best of those to be trusted.
X. “X” – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, could neither read nor write, not even his own name. In today’s world he would have to use an “X” to “sign” a document. He used a signet ring worn on the little finger of his right hand to seal any documents or letters sent to the leaders of other lands.
Y. Yielding – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, would yield his own desires and forego his own ideas in favor of whatever Allah directed him to do. While considering opinions from his followers, he often accepted their ideas over his own, preferring to yield in favor of others as much as possible.
Z. Zealous – Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most zealous of all the prophets of Allah, in carrying out his mission of “Peace through the submission to the Will of God.” He truly was the most enthusiastic in regard to delivering the message with which he had been entrusted by Allah; the message of “Laa elaha illa-allah, Muhammadar-Rasoolulah”
(There is none worthy of worship, except Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah).
Muhammad was truly amazing in every respect. He delivered a message of a complete and total way of life, encompassing everything from the time a person wakes up until time to sleep and from the cradle to the grave. And if someone were to follow this Way of Life (“deen” in Arabic), they would achieve the greatest success here in this life and the greatest success in the Next Life as well.
