What is the reason why fasting is prescribed?
Firstly we must note that one of the names of Allah is al-Hakeem (the Most Wise). The word Hakeem is derived from the same root as hukm (ruling) and hikmah (wisdom). Allah alone is the One Who issues rulings, and His rulings are the most wise and perfect.
Secondly:
Allah does not prescribe any ruling but there is great wisdom behind it, which we may understand, or our minds may not be guided to understand it. We may know some of it but a great deal is hidden from us.
Thirdly:
Allah has mentioned the reason and wisdom behind His enjoining of fasting upon us, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O you who believe! Observing As-Sawm (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)”
[al-Baqarah 2:183]
Fasting is a means of attaining taqwa (piety, being conscious of Allah), and taqwa means doing that which Allah has enjoined and avoiding that which He has forbidden.
Fasting is one of the greatest means of helping a person to fulfill the commands of Islam.
The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) have mentioned some of the reasons why fasting is prescribed, all of which are characteristics of taqwa, but there is nothing wrong with quoting them here, to draw the attention of fasting people to them and make them keen to attain them.
Among the reasons behind fasting are:
1 – Fasting is a means that makes us appreciate and give thanks for pleasures. For fasting means giving up eating, drinking and intercourse, which are among the greatest pleasures. By giving them up for a short time, we begin to appreciate their value. Because the blessings of Allah are not recognized, but when you abstain from them, you begin to recognize them, so this motivates you to be grateful for them.
2 – Fasting is a means of giving up haram things, because if a person can give up halaal things in order to please Allah and for fear of His painful torment, then he will be more likely to refrain from haram things. So fasting is a means of avoiding the things that Allah has forbidden.
3 – Fasting enables us to control our desires, because when a person is full his desires grow, but if he is hungry then his desire becomes weak. Hence the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “O young men! Whoever among you can afford to get married, let him do so, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and protecting one’s chastity. Whoever cannot do that, let him fast, for it will be a shield for him.”
4 – Fasting makes us feel compassion and empathy towards the poor, because when the fasting person tastes the pain of hunger for a while, he remembers those who are in this situation all the time, so he will hasten to do acts of kindness to them and show compassion towards them. So fasting is a means of feeling empathy with the poor.
5 – Fasting humiliates and weakens the Shaytaan; it weakens the effects of his whispers (waswaas) on a person and reduces his sins. That is because the Shaytaan “flows through the son of Adam like blood” as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, but fasting narrows the passages through which the Shaytaan flows, so his influence grows less.
Shaykh al-Islam said in Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 25/246
Undoubtedly blood is created from food and drink, so when a person eats and drinks, the passages through which the devils flow – which is the blood – become wide. But if a person fasts, the passages through which the devils flow become narrow, so hearts are motivated to do good deeds, and to give up evil deeds.
6 – The fasting person is training himself to remember that Allaah is always watching, so he gives up the things that he desires even though he is able to take them, because he knows that Allah can see him.
7 – Fasting means developing an attitude of asceticism towards this world and its desires, and seeking that which is with Allah.
8 – It makes the Muslim get used to doing a great deal of acts of worship, because the fasting person usually does more acts of worship and gets used to that.
These are some of the reasons why fasting is enjoined. We ask Allah to help us to achieve them and to worship Him properly.
And Allah knows best.

Common errors made during Ramadhan

Common errors made during Ramadan
1. Excessive spending
Ramadhan should be a time to avoid being wasteful, and learning to be prepared in facing harder times by distinguishing the needs from the luxuries. Unfortunately, many people go beyond their limits to spend during Ramadhan. Whether in the varieties of food that they savor each night, or by the other types of spending.
2. Staying awake during the night and sleeping during the day
Some people sleep during most of the day when they are fasting. Ramadhan is not a time of being lazy, and this do not allow the full benefit from the experience of fasting. It is as if they have only inverted their nights into days and vice versa. In addition, some may spend a great portion of the night indulging in eating and drinking and socializing
3. Spending more time in socializing
Because people invite each other more often during Ramadhan they do tend to spend more time socializing with friends, and relatives. While it is a good deed to feed the fasting person, this should not result in precious time lost in vain talk. Use the occasion for remembering Allah and offering additional prayers, and for the Da’wah to Allah.
4. Insisting on performing a certain number of Rakaas during the Tarawih
(night) prayer to the point of not praying behind the Imam and thus forfeiting the benefit of congregational prayer. This might also bring hatred and disagreement between the Muslims of one community.
5. Reading Qur’an too fast
Some insist on finishing the whole Qur’an once or more, even if they have to read very fast. Although reading the Qur’an many times is desirable, this should not be done hastily, especially during the Tarawih prayer without pondering upon its meaning.
Allah ta’ala said: “This is a Book which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that they may ponder over its verses,” (Saad 38:29), and the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said: “Those who read the Qur’an in less than three days do not grasp [its meaning]”
6. Socializing in l’tikaf
Many people are eager to do I’tikaf but some confine themselves in the masjid not to pray and worship Allah, but to talk and socialize.
7. The ways of doing good are numerous in Ramadhan
Many people try to perform more than they are able to. By going beyond their capabilities, they end up not performing any deed in the desired way.
8. Scholars and Dai’ahs should assume a more prominent role in educating the people –both by talking to them and by giving the best example in their behavior which should comply to the Shariah and following the Sunnah.
9. The Muslim should realize that his priorities dictate that he does what benefits him in the Hereafter and should not put worldly interests first.
10. The Muslim should apply himself to deepen his sense of following the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, in every aspect of his life, at all times and especially during the month of Ramadhan.
This necessitates seeking more knowledge about the Fiqh of fasting and its etiquette, assimilating the wisdom and goals of fasting, and facilitating the means that allow all the Muslims to benefit from their fasting.
We ask Allah to accept our fast and our good deeds.

Ramadaan 2011 Project :: Time To Recharge Emaan
Composed and Edited By Prnxess *IM*
Dear Brother and Sister, Blessed month of Ramadaan is casting its shadow upon us, Lets give warm welcome to this month by learning more about the virtues, blessings and rulings of this month. Don’t neglect this month of blessing during which Allaah opens the gates of Paradise and closes the gates of Hell, and chains up the devils, as is stated in al-Saheehayn (al-Bukhaari, 1898; Muslim, 1079), from the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah who said that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“When Ramadaan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained up.”
Ramdaan – A Blessed month of Mercy and Forgiveness. Its days are the best of days, its nights are the best of nights and its hours are the best of hours.
It is the month which invites you to be the guest of Allaah and invites you to be one of those near to Him. Each breath you take glorifies Him; your sleep is worship, your deeds are accepted and your supplications are answered.
It is the month of revelation of the Quran, the month of reading and reciting the whole Quran, the month of Tahajjud and the month of Tarawih prayers, of Sadaqah and Zakah-ul-Fitr.
“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan), he must fast that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number (of days which one did not fast must be made up) from other days. Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him” (2: 185).
No one can go anywhere without preparation, and no one invites a guest without preparing to welcome him/her. Similarly, to welcome Ramadan, the month of fasting, one has to prepare.
The Sahaba RadhiAllahu Anhum used to prepare for Ramadan months before it dawned upon them as they believed it would be injustice and bad manners if they did not. The Sahaba would prepare for Ramadan six months in advance. We are also following their beautiful manner which is by default emulating the prophetic way at least a month before Ramadan begins. Let’s prepare our selves for this ramadaan who knows will we see the next ramdan or not? Lets take the best of benifit from this month.
Abu Huraira related that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. And he who passes Lailat al-Qadr in prayer with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven (Bukhari, Muslim).
The month of Ramdaan and Fasting is a gift of Allah for the believers, Its the month where you can make habit of controlling your desires, its the time when you can develop your taqwa more strongly, where you can repent and seek forgiveness of your every past sin, Its the best time to get double reward of every good deed you do. No doubt Ramadaan is the month of blessings in which devils are chained up, gates of hells are closed and the heaven gates are opened! Let’s utilize these blessed moments in complete and proper way!
