Church of England has up to £10m invested in arms firm :: News

On eve of protests at London arms fair, C of E is accused of failing to live up to the ‘spirit’ of its own investment policy

Church of England has up to £10m invested in arms firm

The Church of England has invested up to £10m in one of the world’s major arms firms, which supplies systems and technology for unmanned drones and jets to conflicts around the world. The discovery, on the eve of what is set to be the biggest day of protests against DSEi – the UK’s leading arms fair – in Docklands, London, tomorrow, has led worshippers to accuse church leaders of profiting from conflict.

The Church Commissioners and Church of England Pensions Board are both shareholders in General Electric (GE), with shareholdings up to £10m. Yesterday, the Church defended the investment, claiming less than 3 per cent of GE’s business was based in arms sales.

But the firm, along with its key subsidiary General Aviation, is a leading supplier of “integrated systems and technologies” for combat aircraft, military transport, helicopters, land vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles – better known as drones.

It is the 20th-highest-ranking firm in the world when it comes to defence sales, which accounted for almost 3 per cent of its total revenue last year – an estimated $4bn.

GE also makes the F101 aircraft, which took part in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq. Designed as a “strategic nuclear bomber”, it was modified to carry a “diverse range of conventional weapons”, according to GE’s website.

While the Church of England is not breaching its own rules by investing in the firm – investments in companies that derive less than 10 per cent of turnover from strategic military sales are allowed – some church members reacted angrily to the news.

Keith Hebden, an Anglican priest who was arrested earlier this year for breaking into RAF Waddington – from where drones used in Afghanistan are remotely controlled – said the Church of England’s policy was wrong. He explained: “We’re going to end up with problems. This means we have a stake in wanting there to be war.”

Symon Hill, co-founder of the anti-cuts campaign group Christianity Uncut, said: “Investments in GE conform to the letter but not the spirit of the Church of England’s investment policy.”

A Church spokeswoman pointed out that GE produces dishwashers, lighting, aircraft engines and power plants. She added: “Some of GE’s engines and other products are supplied for military planes, boats and land vehicles. Our research provider estimates that less than 3 per cent of GE’s turnover comes from strategic military supplies.”

The Campaign Against Arms Trade added: “GE is undoubtedly an arms company – why else would it be exhibiting its wares at one of the world’s largest arms fairs? If the Church is committed to following an ethical investment policy, it should drop the GE shares from its portfolio and invest it in companies producing more ethical and beneficial products, including renewable energy technologies.”

Today’s revelations come months after the Church admitted it invested in funds that provided money for the Wonga payday loans company. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, had previously said he would try to force the firm out of business by helping credit unions compete with it. He wanted the Church’s investment rules to be reviewed following the row.

Man held as four stabbed at mosque in Birmingham

_68199637_de16

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after four people, including a policeman, were stabbed at a mosque in Birmingham.

Officers were called to the mosque on Washwood Heath Road in Ward End at about 23:00 BST on Saturday.

West Midlands Police said three men were found with stab injuries.

The officer was wounded as police arrested the 32-year-old man who has since been taken to a secure mental health unit.

A police spokesman said: “The suspect was assessed by mental health expert and was deemed unfit to be interviewed.

“The man will be constantly assessed by medics who will alert detectives as soon as he is deemed well enough to undergo questioning.”

Taser fired

The officer, aged 31, and a 28-year-old man suffered multiple stab wounds while a 36-year-old man sustained a single stab wound to his leg. All three were taken to hospital.

Another victim is recovering at home after injuring his hand.

The incident began during the final prayer session of the evening.

Ch Supt Alex Murray said the man they arrested was of Somalian descent and that a “sizeable knife” had been used in the attack.

Mr Murray said officers arrived at the mosque within four minutes of reports of the stabbings.

The suspect was found in a room in the mosque but when challenged he ran at one of the two police officers.

The officer, who suffered chest and stomach injuries, fired a Taser at the knifeman but it did not halt him, Mr Murray said.

“The individual was worshipping but not known to the mosque,” he added, before thanking and reassuring the local community.

Domestic dispute

Dr Arshad Mahmood, who was at the mosque, said: “A man started stabbing one of the guys who was just sitting right next to him.

“I don’t know what exactly was the reason but he just started stabbing him.

“We went to save him. He had multiple injuries, three or four wounds.

“Then the policeman came and was also attacked and stabbed.”

Mohammed Shafiq, the leader of national Muslim organisation the Ramadhan Foundation, said his thoughts were with the injured and their families.

“I have spoken to someone who lives a few doors down from the mosque and they described hearing an argument between some of the people inside.

“It escalated into violence and a police officer has been stabbed.”

According to Mr Shafiq, a nearby resident believed the dispute was a domestic incident between mosque members.

‘Shocking’

The mosque involved is the Washwood Heath Muslim Centre in Ward End.

The Birmingham Hodge Hill MP Liam Byrne, who visited the scene, said: “Police and the community have been working together through the night and early this morning and what’s very clear is that this is a sad, tragic and isolated incident.

“It’s not a hate crime.

“What’s really important now is that everybody stays very calm and we let the wheels of justice turn.”

Ansar Ali Khan, the city councillor for Washwood Heath, said people will have been attending the mosque for local prayers.

“We’ve never had a problem, we always have a very peaceful situation in this area,” he said.

“This is shocking for me to know the police officer has been stabbed as well.”
