In Search of the Body Beautiful….

hijabi03There seems no limit nowadays to the extent that women (and men) are prepared to go to for that ‘perfect look’. Forget false eyelashes and wigs, we are now talking scalpels, implants and liposuction!

Cosmetic surgery amongst film actresses has been commonplace for quite some time now, but these days, we wouldn’t be too hard pressed to find ordinary women on the street who are more plastic than real! Indeed, in some circles, having multiple facelifts has become a status symbol: the more you have, the higher you are in the status rankings.

If questioned whether cosmetic surgery was Islamically correct or not, then without doubt, most Muslims would instinctively respond by saying that it isn’t, for the simple reason that it would be interfering with Allah’s creation. And certainly, this would be the correct response. [Scholars have noted several exceptions to this general rule if there is a genuine medical need for it.]

The companion, Ibn Mas’ood radiaIaahu ‘anhu, once said (quoting what he had heard the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam say):

Allah has cursed the tattooers and those who have themselves tattooed, and those women who have their teeth filed for beauty and those who have their [facial] hair plucked and thus alter Allah’s creation.

A woman remarked, “What’s all this?” So Ibn Mas’ood – radiAllahu ‘anhu -said: “Should I not curse one whom Allah’s Messenger cursed? And it is in the Book of Allah.” She said: “I have read the Qur’an from cover to cover but I did not find that in it.” He replied: “If you had read it thoroughly you would have found it.

Allah says:

Whatever the Messenger gives you take it; and whatever he has forbidden, refrain from it. [Qur’an ul-Hashr (59):7]”

So the Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam forbade women from performing these three practices which the women commonly did for the sake of beauty in those days – seemingly ‘insignificant’ practices for which they would incur the curse of Allah.

And this forbiddance isn’t just restricted to the procedures mentioned in the hadeeth.

Because Allah says in more general terms in His Book:

So set your face truly to the faith, Allah’s handiwork according to the pattern on which He has made mankind; [Let there be] no change in the creation of Allah. [Qur’an Ar-Room (30):30].

Therefore, it is obligatory for us to accept the creation of Allah as it is, not making any alterations to it. More importantly though, it is also obligatory for us to believe that all of Allah’s creation is beautiful, because Allah, the Khaaliq (Creator) does not create anything except with beauty and perfection, which is why He says to mankind:

You can see no fault in the creation of Ar-Rahmaan [the Most Merciful]. Then look again: Can you see any rifts? Then look – again and yet again, your sight will return to you in a state of humiliation and worn out. [Qur’an Al-MuIk (67): 3-4].

This may all sound quite strange when we consider how often we hear women complaining about their appearance. In fact, it is estimated that over half of the Western women today actually perceive themselves to be ugly. In addition, surveys show that nearly all women feel under pressure to “look good”.

As a result, the quest for beauty has become a serious preoccupation for many women. Open up any women’s magazine and you will not fail to find a single one which doesn’t contain tips on how to ‘look good”, or which don’t contain huge advertisements promoting new creams that halt the aging process or concealers to hide wrinkles etc.

Beauty today is big business. Beauty contests are very profitable and – contrary to popular belief – more are spawned every year. The cosmetics market is a multi-billion dollar industry; the demand for cosmetic surgery is growing at a tremendous rate. All three industries promote the same notions of beauty that woman everywhere are expected to meet: mainly a white, European, “Barbie-doll” like standard. The pressures on women to conform to these standards are enormous and few are able to withstand them.

The fact is that Western women today may complain that they are not treated with equality and respect, but it is they themselves who have made it acceptable for society worldwide to see women merely as beauty-objects who are there to be ogled by the men who in turn are the (im) polite voyeurs.

When viewed in this light, we find that beauty contests are not too dissimilar to reality itself: just as the tallest, slimmest blonde girl gets the title in the beauty contest, in the real world it’s the tallest, slimmest blonde girl who gets the man!

In Islam, beauty is not just in the eye of the beholder. Beauty is in the whole of creation, because Allah – the One free of all imperfections – is the one responsible for it. And as Allah says:

Your Lord creates whatsoever He wills and chooses: no choice have they. SubhaanAllah! And far removed is He from the partners they ascribe [to Him]! [Qur’an Al-Qasas 28:68].

So it is from the wisdom of Allah that He has chosen to create some of us short, others tall, some fat, some thin, some dark-colored, some light – all are beautiful and perfect in their own right. That is why we are taught from the Sunnah, the beautiful du’aa (supplication) that the Prophet sallAllahu ‘alaihi wa sallam would say:

‘O Allah, as You have made my appearance beautiful, likewise make my character beautiful. – (‘Allahumma kama hassanta khalaqee fa hassin khuluqee”).

As Muslims, we must believe that evil and imperfection cannot be attributed to Allah. The desire to change any aspect of ourselves means, in effect, that we are dissatisfied with Allah’s choice and His handiwork, and that there is imperfection in what He has created. Thus to say about ourselves, or anyone else, that we or they are ugly is a great sin.

This point was reinforced by the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam when he once saw the Companion, ‘Amr Ibn Fulaan Al-Ansaaree radiallahu ‘anhu, whose izaar (lower garment) was hanging low (to the ground), so he, sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, ordered that he raise it. ‘Amr made an excuse saying that he had skinny shins (i.e. he was embarrassed to show them), so the Prophet responded by saying: O ‘Amr! Verily Allah Azza wa Jal has created everything in the best form.

All this is certainly not intended to discourage women to look after themselves and adorn themselves in lawful ways (e.g. wearing nice clothes, having nicely done hair etc.). Indeed, adorning oneself is something that the wives are obliged to do for their husbands and Allah rewards the woman who pleases the husband when he looks at her. But with these tremendous pressures on women to conform to the ideals set by the marketing media, it may be hard for Muslim women to resist feeling insecure or uncomfortable about their appearance.

Consequently, many Muslim women have shed their hijabs for the sake of following fashion; Muslim women too develop inferiority complexes about themselves.

We must bear in mind that this search for the ‘body beautiful’ is, in reality, a deception from Shaytaan. Shaytaan has vowed that he will create such false desires in mankind. He has said (as stated in the Qur’an):

Surely I will arouse in them (mankind] false desires; and certainly I will order them to slit the ears of cattle, and indeed I will order them to change the nature created by Allah. [Qur’an An-Nisaa (4): 119].

May Allah always keep us safe from the false promises of Shaytaan, for verily Allah is the One Who guides to the Truth.

Allah tells us that with the Qur’an, He brought “glory and honor” (Qur’an, 23;71) to human beings.

He gives prosperity to everyone who practices the morality of Islam and follows the path that He has revealed in the Qur’an. And the only way for some women to escape all the anxieties that ignorant societies subject them to, and to gain the respect they deserve, is to be found in the Qur’an, revealed to our Prophet (saas) so that human beings could come out of darkness and enter into light.

hijab22In many verses of the Qur’an, Allah protects women and defends their rights, removes wrong ideas about women current in ignorant societies, and grants them a respected place in society.

The Qur’an tells us that in the sight of God, the measure of a human being’s worth lies not in gender; but in the fear of God, in faith, moral perfection, sincerity towards Allah and piety (taqwa). All these verses are proofs of our Lord’s incomparable generosity toward women.

O Humanity! We created you from a male and female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you might come to know each other. The noblest among you in Allah’s sight is the one of you who best performs his duty. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (Qur’an, 49:13)

Children of Adam! We have sent down clothing to you to conceal your private parts, and fine apparel, but the garment of heedfulness–that is best! That is one of Allah’s Signs, so that hopefully you will pay heed. (Qur’an, 7:26)

Elsewhere in the Qur’an, Allah says

“Whatever good you do, Allah knows it. Take provision; but the best provision is fear of Allah. So have fear of Me, people of intelligence!” (Qur’an, 2:197).

He tells us that the best quality a human being can have is piety. Therefore, it must be piety, chiefly, that gives humans their basic value and superiority in God’s sight.

In the Qur’an, Allah says: “The men and women who give charity and make a good loan to Allah will have it increased for them and they will have a generous reward.” (Qur’an, 57:18)

This verse reminds both women and men that they will receive a true reward of supreme honor by living the moral life that Allah has directed. Women and men have different physical characteristics, of course, but this is not the reason for either gender’s superiority. In another verse, Allah says that wealth has become a measure of superiority in the minds of some people, but it is more acceptable to desire God’s generosity:

Do not covet what Allah has given to some of you in preference to others—men have a portion of what they acquire and women have a portion of what they acquire; but ask Allah for His bounty. Allah has knowledge of all things. (Qur’an, 4:32)

In the Qur’an, Allah has told us what must be done to protect and care for women in society and give them the respect they deserve. All these measures are for their sake so that women will not be harmed or oppressed.

In the Qur’an,Allah has shown humanity the true path and has vitiated the false practices of ignorant belief. According to Islamic morality, the important thing is not being born a man or a woman, but to be attached to Allah with deep faith and fear. Carefully obeying God’s commands and prohibitions is to try to live as best one can according to the moral teachings of the Qur’an. Such a character will be of a person’s true value in the sight of God.

In the Qur’an, Allah explains the basic qualities that anyone of faith must have, whether he be a man or a woman:

The men and women of the believers are friends of one another. They command what is right and forbid what is wrong, and perform prayer and give the alms, and obey Allah and His Messenger. They are the people on whom Allah will have mercy. Allah is Almighty, All-Wise. (Qur’an, 9:71)

As Allah tells us in the Qur’an, believing women and men are responsible for worshipping, living according to the moral teachings of the Qur’an, urging others to engage in good and refrain from evil, and obeying all His commands and exhortations in the Qur’an. Allah has promised to give to all persons, to both men or women alike, “discrimination” (Qur’an, 8:29).

In return for their faith and sincerity, Allah will guide individuals in every field of life and bring them on the right path toward Himself. He will help them to make right decisions and behave correctly; and He will give them intelligence, understanding and perception. Therefore, intelligence is not based on a person’s gender; it comes totally from the fear of Allah and a sincere attachment and closeness to Him.

Every man or woman who acts according the intelligence derived from faith may surpass many others and can attain success in every area of life. This depends completely on the individual’s will, zeal and determination. In accordance with the precepts of Islamic morality, no people of faith will ever consider themselves to be perfect in any way. Rather, they always strive to be more intelligent, more able, more responsible, more developed in their character and more successful at leading a good moral life. In so far as hey can, they will try to develop themselves in every area.

In the Qur’an, Allah tells that believers pray to Him so that they provide examples of good character to those around them:

[Believers are] those who say, “Our Lord, give us joy in our wives and children and make us a good example for those who guard against evil.” (Qur’an, 25:74)

A Muslim woman who tries to do her best in everything and be a fine example to everyone with her character, moral rectitude and personality will, Allah willing, also attain a high position in her society. She carries out her every responsibility as best she can, makes the most appropriate decisions, finds the best solutions to problems and puts the best measures into effect.

We can see that according to the moral practice of Islam, men and women are completely equal in society. By means of the Qur’an, the All-Merciful Allah has nullified the distinctions that all ignorant belief systems make between men and women; and He has commanded that women be given the value they deserve. All this depends totally on the strength of men’s—and women’s—faith in Allah as well as on their moral character and the responsibilities they assume.

Therefore, women who embrace Islamic morality never need to struggle for equality with men; they enter, instead, into a moral “contest” of worthiness. In the contest of goodness, those with faith must show their best efforts to earn God’s good pleasure at every moment of their lives.

With this goal in mind, they contend in their contest toward goodness to become the person closest to Allah and most beloved and favored by Him. However, this contest is purely for God’s Will. In the Qur’an, Allah tells us that one of the main characteristics of believers that exalts them in this world and the next is the efforts they exert to achieve this goal:

Such people are truly racing towards good things, and they are the first to reach them. (Qur’an, 23:61)

Then We made Our chosen servants inherit the Book. But some of them wrong themselves; some are ambivalent; and some outdo each other in good by Allah’s permission. That is the great favor. (Qur’an, 35:32)

In another verse, Allah reminds us that no one–man or woman–will be treated unjustly in this world or in the Hereafter, but that everyone will get exactly what he or she deserves:

Anyone who acts rightly, male or female, being a believer, We will give them a good life and We will recompense them according to the best of what they did. (Qur’an, 16:97)

All these things are proofs of the mercy that Allah displays to His faithful servants. In societies that do not practice the moral teachings of the Qur’an, women are still treated like second-class citizens. But as a manifestation of His name as “the All Merciful,” Allah protects all women and gives them glory and due honor.

Muslim women uncover myths about the hijab

She doesn’t want your frosty public stares; the whispers behind her back; the lament that she’s been degraded by her father.

Rowaida Abdelaziz says wearing the hijab sometimes interferes with usual U.S. teenager activities, but that it's worth it to her faith.

Rowaida Abdelaziz says wearing the hijab sometimes interferes with usual U.S. teenager activities, but that it's worth it to her faith.

What the Muslim high school senior wants you to understand is that she doesn’t wear the hijab, the head scarf worn by Muslim women, because she is submissive.

“It represents beauty to me,” says Abdelaziz, the 17-year-old daughter of two Egyptian parents living in Old Bridge, New Jersey.

“My mom says a girl is like a jewel,” Abdelaziz says. “When you have something precious, you usually hide it. You want to make sure you keep it safe until that treasure is ready to be found.”

The nation has heard plenty of debate over racial profiling. But there’s a form of religious profiling that some young Muslim women in America say they endure whenever they voluntarily wear the hijab.

The hijab, also known as the veil, is the headscarf worn by Muslim women around the globe. It’s a simple piece of cloth, but it can place young Muslim women in Western countries in difficult situations.

Some hijab-wearers say that strangers treat them as if they’re terrorists.
Others ask them if they’re a nun — or even allergic to the sun. In some cases, their worst critics are not Americans, but fellow Muslim Americans.

The pressure on Muslim teenagers in the U.S. who wear the hijab may be even more acute. Their challenge: How do I fit in when I wear something that makes me stand out?

Randa Abdel-Fattah, who has written two novels about this question, says wearing the hijab can “exhaust” some young Muslim women in the West.

“You can sometimes feel like you’re in a zoo: locked in the cage of other people’s stereotypes, prejudices and judgments, on parade to be analyzed, deconstructed and reconstructed,”

says Abdel-Fattah, a Muslim who has Palestinian and Egyptian parents but was born in Australia.

Abdel-Fattah says people should not assume that Muslim women who wear the hijab are being controlled by men. She, too, struggled with the choice of wearing a hijab when she was a teenager.

“When it comes to the hijab — why to wear it, whether to wear it, how to wear it — there is theology and then there is practice and there is huge diversity in both,” says Abdel-Fattah, author of “Does My Head Look Big in This?”

The surprising history behind the hijab

artSome women say the hijab makes them feel like they’re locked in a cage. But others say it leads to personal freedom.

Sarah Hekmati first wore the hijab at age 15 growing up in Detroit, Michigan. She is the daughter of Iranian parents who left Iran in 1979 during the Islamic revolution.

Hekmati says the hijab liberated her from some teenage angst: Does my hair look good? Am I cute enough? Should I lose weight?

“It gave me a sense of identity,” she says. “I really liked the purpose behind the hijab — a woman covering herself so that a man should know her for her mind, not her body.”

That purpose can be traced back to the Quran, Islam’s holy text, which encourages women to dress modestly, says Faegheh Shirazi, author of “The Veil Unveiled.”

Some Muslims take the Quran’s advice as a command for women to wear the hijab, while others disagree, she says.

“The Quran is very ambiguous about whether you have to wear the veil or not,” Shirazi says.

The hijab, however, actually predates Islam, Shirazi explains. The first known reference to veiling (Shirazi uses the term hijab and veil interchangeably) was made in an Assyrian legal text in the 13th century B.C., Shirazi says.

In the Assyrian, and later, the Roman and Byzantine empires, the veil was a symbol of prestige and status, she says. By the 12th century, the veil had been imposed on women in the Muslim world to exclude them from public life, Shirazi says.

“A sign of distinction had been transformed into a sign of exclusion,” she writes in her book.

People are still debating the meaning of the hijab today.

In 2007, British Muslim groups protested when schools were given the right to ban students from wearing full-face veils. In 2008, Turkey’s top court upheld a ban on wearing Muslim headscarves at the country’s universities. That same year, a Muslim woman was briefly jailed at a suburban Atlanta, Georgia, courthouse after refusing to remove her hijab in court.

Some moms against hijab wearing

The debate over the hijab can literally hit home for some young Muslim women. Those that wear the hijab in the United States can befuddle their mothers, who often immigrated to the West so they could be free from wearing the hijab and other rules imposed on women.

That’s what happened to Hekmati, the Muslim-American from Detroit. Her mother, Behnaz, was puzzled by her daughter’s decision to wear the hijab. Behnaz Hekmati grew up in Iran, where she did not wear the hijab. Young women who attended college in Iran like she did generally didn’t wear the hijab, she says.

Behnaz Hekmati warned her daughter that wearing the hijab would arouse the suspicion of Americans.

“I said Sarah, when you cover your head here the people think you are political — they see you differently,” Behnaz Hekmati says.

Most of the trouble, though, came from Iranian-Americans, who came to the United States to escape the Islamic fundamentalists who seized power in 1979, she says.

“The Iranians here bother her more than Americans,” Behnaz Hekmati says. “They say, ‘We got rid of you guys. We came here because we didn’t want to see you guys anymore.'”

Hekmati was more concerned as a teenager about more personal issues, like her relations with boys. The hijab made it more difficult, she says. Few asked her on dates. Guys always seemed to put her in the “friend category.” She wondered if she was attractive.

“I wondered at times: Am I always going to be a guy’s friend and nothing more.”

Strangers in public saw her as something else — a subjugated woman.

They looked at her with pity, she says. Some were just baffled.

“One guy asked me if I was allergic to the sun,” Hekmati says.

Abdelaziz, the New Jersey high school senior, also had her tense public encounters: angry looks, people feeling sorry for her or assuming her father ordered her to wear the hijab.

It’s not oppression; it’s not that I’m accepting degradation — it’s about self-respect,” she says.

But it’s more about faith as well. She says the hijab affirms “Islam in the most respectful and purified way.”

When you actually wear it, it opens your eyes,” she says. “It makes you want to explore your religious faith.

At times, Abdelaziz says she wonders what it would be like to attend her prom, get a tan at the beach and have a boyfriend.

But she says her decision to honor her faith is already paying off.

“It really feels good,” she says. “It felt like I was missing something and now I’m complete. I finally understand my purpose.”

Unkown Person : Hello,i want to know the rate of your girl for 2 hr ?What’s her age ?

A Father : shocked ! What ?

UnKown Person : What is the rate of your girl for 2 hrs and for night ?

i guess,he will never understand what the hell is going on.Can you imagine the father’s agony?

The father of a South Delhi schoolgirl suffered from the fake profile of his daughter posted on Orkut that not only described the teenager as a ’sex teacher’, but also contained obscene photographs and her contact details.

The teenager’s family had received the first call where the caller wanted to speak to the girl. Similar calls poured in later, the police said, adding all the callers referred to Orkut.

Father of the girl lodged a complaint with the Cyber Cell of the Delhi Police’s Economic Offences after his family started receiving calls following the appearance of the fake profile.

An air-hostess had moved a court here alleging that someone has opened an account in her name on Orkut wherein she is being described as a “sex struck woman”.

The family had a harrowing time when two strangers knocked at their door a fortnight ago and told them the girl had invited them for sex, they added. Police said a case has been registered and investigations were on.

the airhostes claimed that act has lowered her reputation in the eyes of her family members and neighbors.she also said that she have written to the national commission of the women ministry against her criminal defamation, but no actions have been taken so far.

It was one of those normal evenings when Parmeet Kaur (name changed), a software engineer in Chennai, logged on to Orkut to unwind from work and catch up with friends. But one and a half minutes later, the evening turned shocking and miserable for her.

What she saw was a cheeky scrap and forward to a profile that had her semi-nude photo in another girl’s profile, tagged as her sister who flagged joint hints of intimate advances and indecent invites. Parmeet’s photo had been brazenly and easily tampered with.

After many weeks of tension and repeated requests to Orkut, the ID was removed. She vowed never to be vulnerable again.

Victims like Parmeet, are not one-off. They belong to the new breed of cautious Orkuters,Facebook users who either have said goodbye to networking or have got extremely careful with their communities and photographs.”

FONTANA, California – A group of boys who posed as a 15-year-old girl for an Internet prank ended up police arrest a 48-year-old man who tried to meet the fictitious teenager for sex, authorities said.created a fake profile of a girl on — a social networking Web site — to cheer up a friend who had recently broken up with his girlfriend.

A bachelor student was arrested for creating a classmate’s profile and messages on an Online Community Called ORKUT.

When Sushma Sharma logged on orkut, she received a scrap(orkut cmnt) saying Hi from the profile that seemed to be her own. This made her wonder since she never wrote it in her own scrapbook. Out of curiousity she clicked on the profile, and to her utter dismay she was flooded with vulgar comments and cheap discriptions about her.

The profile also had her photograph and cell number.after this she started getting vulgar phone calls..then they complained to cyber cell, then the problem was solved.
