Lubna Hannash(21 yr) Assassinated By Israel Near Hebron :: News

lubna_hanash11

Lubna Hanash, a young Palestinian woman, was shot and killed today by Israeli occupation forces riding in a civilian car near Arroub refugee camp which is on the road between Bethlehem and Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank.

Hanash was a fourth-year political science student at Al-Quds University, according to Al-Quds newspaper, and had been visiting her sister in Arroub camp.

Reuters reported:

Witnesses said Lubna Hanash and her companions were walking to al-Arroub College when men in Israeli military uniforms travelling in a civilian car shot at the group.

Maan news agency, which gave Hanash’s age as 22, said:

Witnesses told Ma’an that Israeli soldiers traveling in a civilian car opened fire at a group of people at the entrance to al-Arrub refugee camp south of Bethlehem.

Lubna Munir Hanash, 22, was shot in the head and died from her injuries, medics said.

Suad Yusuf Jaara was shot in the hand and transported to Ahli hospital in Hebron.

Witnesses told Ma’an that after the shooting Israeli soldiers prevented an ambulance from arriving at the scene for around 10 minutes.

Locals said there were no clashes in the area at the time.

However, local sources reported that clashes broke out between Israeli occupation forces and youths near Arroub refugee camp following the passage of Lubna’s body.

The video above shows raw footage from al-Ahli hospital in Hebron including shots of Hanash on a stretcher with a heavily bandaged head who may be Hanash, another woman in pain, with a bandaged arm on a stretcher, who may be her companion, and a distressed male relative – possibly Hanash’s father – lamenting Hanash’s passing and exclaiming against Palestinian Authority leaders.

Israeli occupation forces claimed according to Ma’an that “soldiers were attacked by Palestinians who hurled multiple firebombs at them while they were traveling near al-Arrub. Soldiers returned fire and the circumstances of the incident are currently being reviewed.”

However such Israeli claims are routinely made to justify arbitrary killings of Palestinians and almost never result in credible investigations.

Escalation in killings by occupation forces

In December, Muhammad al-Salaymeh, a Hebron teen, was shot dead on his 17th birthday in unexplained circumstances. Claims by the Israeli soldier who shot him that Muhammad had brandished a weapon and taken another soldier hostage, were proven false by video of the incident.

Earlier on Wednesday, a Palestinian child, 15-year-old Salih al-Amarin, died of gunshot wounds inflicted by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank city of Bethlehem last week.

Ma’an added that last Tuesday, “17-year-old Samir Ahmad Abdul-Rahim was the fourth Palestinian shot dead by Israeli forces in less than a week.”

Six Palestinians have been killed by Israeli occupation forces this month.

Occupation 101: Voice of the Silenced Majority

#1 Documentary Movie on Israel and Palestine Conflict

Occupation 101 - Israel Vs Palestine Conflict Documentary

Occupation 101 – Israel Vs Palestine Conflict Documentary

Occupation 101: Voice of the Silenced Majority is a 2006 Award-winning documentary film on the root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The film depicts life in occupied Palestine under Israeli military occupation.

Synopsis: A thought-provoking and powerful documentary film on the current and historical root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Unlike any other film ever produced on the conflict — ‘Occupation 101’ presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts and hidden truths surrounding the never ending controversy and dispels many of its long-perceived myths and misconceptions.

The film focuses on the effects of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and discusses events from the rise of Zionism to the Second Intifada and Israel’s unilateral disengagement plan, presenting its perspective through dozens of interviews, questioning the nature of Israeli-American relations — in particular, the Israeli military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, and the ethics of US monetary involvement.

Occupation 101 includes interviews with mostly American and Israeli scholars, religious leaders, humanitarian workers, and NGO representatives — more than half of whom are Jewish — who are critical of the injustices and human rights abuses stemming from Israeli policy in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza.

US to renew Israel munitions stock to make up for Gaza war

The United States is to supply the Israeli regime with munitions worth $647 million to renew its stock after Tel Aviv’s massive bombings during the eight-day war on Gaza.

The US Department of Defense informed the Congress of a deal to sell munitions including 6,900 precision bomb kits to the Tel Aviv regime only a month after Israel’s aggression on Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip, the Israeli dailyHaaretz said in a report on Tuesday.

The deal will also include the sale of 6,900 Joint Attack Munitions tail kits, which are capable of converting bombs into “smart munitions” guided by satellite and capable of hitting targets precisely.

The US will also sell 10,000 bombs, including 1,725 BLU-109 bunker-buster bombs, 3,450 GBU-39 bunker-buster bombs designed for equipped targets, 3,450 bombs that are up to one ton each and 1,725 bombs that each weighs 250 kilograms.

The Israeli paper said that the deal was aimed at renewing Tel Aviv’s munitions stock after its recent attacks on Gaza.

Washington vehemently supported Tel Aviv during the eight-day attack from November 14-21, with US President Barack Obama repeatedly saying that the US was “fully supportive of Israel’s right to defend itself.”

Even after a ceasefire between the Israeli regime and the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, Obama said he would “use the opportunity” to boost his administration’s military aid to Israel.

This is while the Tel Aviv regime reportedly receives $3 billion from the White House in foreign assistance every year.

Over 160 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed and about 1,200 others were injured in the Israeli attacks on Gaza. In retaliation, Palestinian resistance fighters fired rockets and missiles into Israeli cities, killing at least five Israelis.

The violence ended after the Israeli regime and Hamas agreed to an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire.

Israel reject UN Vote System and disrespects international community decisions: Analyst

A prominent analyst says that the Zionist entity has always violated the international law by disrespecting the international community’s will and ignoring the United Nations’ resolutions against its illegal activities.

The European Union (EU) has summoned Israel’s ambassador over recently-announced plan to build thousands of new settler units on the occupied Palestinian territories. Tel Aviv announced the plan for new settler units in the West Bank just a few days ago in response to the United Nations’ recognition of Palestine as a non-member observer state. In the meantime the Zionist regime rejected calls by the United Nations demanding Tel Aviv to open its nuclear facilities to international inspectors and to join Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Press TV has conducted an interview with Omar Nashabe, with the al-Akhbar Newspaper from the Lebanese capital city of Beirut to shed more light on the issue at hand. He is joined by two additional guests on Press TV’s News Analysis program: Muhammad al-Asi, Imam of Washington D.C.’s Islamic Center from Washington and British Journalist Richard Millett from London. What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Omar Nashabe I am not too sure why this question seems to revert to Iran in one sense when we are talking about Israel and that is purely a simple thing that they do not want to join the NPT [Non-proliferation Treaty], they are slamming the UN General Assembly and they are saying that we are not going to be transparent.

Your response to not only that but to our guest Richard Millett in London?

Nashabe: I think that it is normal that Israelis and supporters of Israel are a bit frustrated because it has come out in the open now once again that the majority of the world think that there is injustice in this part of the world and that Israel is responsible of this injustice.

It has nothing to do with anti-Semitism or any other lines that are used by the Israeli propaganda. This is a matter we are asking for a nuclear-free Middle East and Israel should comply with a nuclear-free Middle East and today Israel has showed that it does not want to comply with this regardless if Israel wants or the supporters of Israel want to play around and say that they do have or they do not have nuclear weapons; there is enough evidence and there was a book on Dimona [nuclear plant] and there was an Israeli, Mr. [Modechai] Vanunu, who came out and said clearly and showed pictures and evidence and this was published in the UK in respectable publishing houses and it was clearly evidential that Israel has these nuclear facilities and has these nuclear weapons and that this is not safe for the whole region and I think that for the majority of the world and I disagree completely to accuse African countries or Asian countries or any other countries that are members of the United Nations, or undegrading these countries by saying that they are being driven by a propaganda that is anti-Israeli.

There is no anti-Israeli propaganda as much as there is anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab and anti-Iranian propaganda and everybody knows who controls the media and everybody knows who has the upper hand in pressuring countries in the United Nations.

So I think that 174 countries who voted, this is the majority of the world and in the past few days 136 countries to vote for Palestine as a member of the United Nations is the majority of the world and I think that Palestine and Palestinians have the right like anyone else to have their own country and they deserve to be a member in the United Nations like anyone else.

So I raise the question, who is trying to wipe off a whole population? I think that is the main question.

It is not to always show that Israel is the victim, It is to show that the Palestinians have the basic rights and they need to get these basic rights like any other human beings on the face of the earth.

Press TV: Omar Nashabe, our guest there [Richard Millett] seems to think that out of the 193 nations that consist of the UN General Assembly, that the law is not catered for Israel. That is what I am gathering from you Richard Millett.

Omar Nashabe do you agree? Are all these countries that have demanded Israel to stop their illegal settlements, are they all wrong?

Nashabe: Well, I do not know what to say when somebody says that the international law is just an idea that has not been crystallized…, I mean I really do not know what [how] to respond to that.

I mean international is recognized by the countries that are members in the United Nations and it is a matter that should be enforced and this is in order to preserve stability in the world.

I think that there was an agreement, there were some agreements that Israel signed on in the negotiations that took place in the past with the Palestinian authorities and under these agreements that were signed by both parties and that were endorsed by the international community and by the quartet, Israel is not supposed to build settlements; this is a violation of international law.

In fact the declaration of Mr. Netanyahu of building 3,000 settlement units following the vote of the United Nations, clearly shows that Israel is using the building of settlements as a punishment to the Palestinians and as a defiance to the international community.

This will create more tension and this is not helpful for a peaceful resolution of the conflict, in which I think, the majority of the countries of the world are seeking a peaceful resolution for this conflict that has been going on for so long.

A peaceful resolution can only tale place based on justice and the principles of justice and international law.

These go without saying, these are general principles that I believe anyone around the world should abide by.

The United Nations is an organization that was created in order to preserve peace and stability and in order to create an environment that is suitable for every citizen on the face of the globe, to live in a state that is in dignity and in a high standard of living.

I think that this Israeli entity is creating defiance of the international community and of the United Nations and I am not mentioning the numerous Security Council resolutions that are legally binding that Israel does not respect such as resolution 242 that calls upon the immediate withdrawal of Israelis from the West Bank, the Golan Heights and the East Jerusalem [al-Quds].

These are Security Council’s resolution; anyone can read those on the websites. If one really wants to know, one can actually have access to international law and can know what is legally binding.

Now if Israelis and the supporters of Israel chose to violate the international law. That is a matter that should be raised again and that explains why so many countries are voting for resolutions that are contested by the Israelis because they do not a peaceful resolution of the conflict, obviously.

The Gazan state– and the West Bank Bantustans

 _63099047_westbank_old_new_624_2

A cease-fire is only a beginning; it is transitional stage in relations between Israel and Hamas.  The cease-fire must be extended into a permanent or a long-term (tens of years) agreement.  The United States already indicated that that is the goal.

But a permanent agreement is probably impossible.  First, because Israel is determined not to allow an economically viable, sovereign Palestinian state to emerge.  Second, because Palestinians are not unified.

The time seems right for Palestinian unification with both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority achieving big wins – Hamas stood up to Israel in the recent war and won an easing of the blockade, and the Palestinian Authority achieved “non-member observer status” in the United Nations by a strong majority of 139 to 9 with 41 abstentions.  And there was a positive signal this week when Hamas and Islamic Jihad publicly backed the PLO bid to upgrade Palestinian status in the United Nations.

That said, two factors work against unification.  First, the Palestinian Authority victory at the United Nations will be diminished by “punishment” meted out by Israel and the United States.  No sooner had the U.N. vote occurred than American Ambassador Susan Rice took the Palestinian Authority to task for taking unilateral action.  In the meantime, both Israel and the U.S. Congress are threatening to withhold essential funds from the Palestinian Authority.  Second,  the contrasting approach to Palestinian liberation – confrontation for Hamas and conciliation and cooperation for the Palestinian Authority – make the prospects for real cooperation and sharing leadership seem dim.

An alternative to a permanent peace is a 50 or 100 year hudnah (truce) between Israel and Hamas.  A hudnah is possible because it is a win-win for both Israel and Hamas.

But first, Hamas must demonstrate that it controls its territory.  For the past few years Islamic Jihad and other groups have acted freely within the territory that Hamas claims to govern.  Israel will not make long-term agreement with Hamas unless Hamas can demonstrate better control of its territory.

A Hudnah

Gershon Baskin promoted a long-term hudnah between Israel and Hamas, and described it in his October 17, 2012 Op-Ed in the NY Times (link to www.nytimes.com).  Baskin claimed that “key Hamas leaders and members of the Shura Council, its senior decision-making body, supported a new cease-fire effort because they … understood the futility of successive rocket attacks against Israel that left no real damage on Israel and dozens of casualties in Gaza.”  The reason this hudnah is different is that it included both a mechanism for dealing with impending terror threats and a clear definition of breaches.  That is, this hudnah includes mechanisms to verify intentions and ensure compliance.

Baskin’s goal is “to move beyond the patterns of the past.  For years, it has been the same story: Israeli intelligence discovers information about an impending terrorist attack from Gaza.  The Israeli Army takes pre-emptive action with an airstrike against the suspected terror cells, which are often made up of fighters from groups like Islamic Jihad, the Popular Resistance Committees or Salafi groups not under Hamas’s control but functioning within its territory. [In retaliation,] these cells launch rockets into Israeli towns near Gaza, and they often miss their targets.  The Israeli Air Force responds swiftly.  The typical result is between 10 and 25 casualties in Gaza, zero casualties in Israel and huge amounts of property damage on both sides.”

End Gaza Blockade

To be successful a hudnah must end Israel’s blockade of Gaza.  The necessary steps have been enunciated by Gisha (link to www.gisha.org), the Legal Center for Freedom of Movement, an Israeli human rights group focused on protecting the freedom of movement of Palestinians, especially Gaza residents, as guaranteed by international and Israeli law.

Gisha says that as of today, “the Israeli government maintains three restrictions on Gaza’s land crossings that must be removed to protect the rights of Palestinians to reach family members and access educational and economic opportunities.”  To effect these changes, Israel must:

1.      Allow entrance of construction materials for the private sector in Gaza.  Israel claims the restrictions are necessary to prevent Hamas from building bunkers, but the massive tunnel commerce makes the ban ineffective.

2.      Allow goods from Gaza to reach their traditional markets in Israel and the West Bank. Prior to the ban imposed in June 2007, more than 85% of goods leaving Gaza were sold in Israel and the West Bank.

3.      Allow individual travel between Gaza and the West Bank.  This will reuniting children with their parents, allow students to attend university, facilitate economic opportunities for manufactures and farmers, and support unification of Palestinian society.

Gisha says these changes will not degrade Israeli security because individual security checks will still be imposed.

Easing the blockade was part of the cease-fire agreement, and some steps have already been announced:  (1) Israel has doubled the area that is open to Gaza fisherman from there to six miles from shore.  (2) Israel will allow Gaza farmers to plant in the buffer zone – the 1 kilometer wide strip on the Gaza side of the border that Israel had excluded Gazans from.  The buffer zone contains about one-third of Gaza’s arable land, and under the rules announced Saturday, Gaza farmers will have access to a significantly fraction of that land.

Gaza Is Becoming a State

A hudnah between Hamas and Israel, and an end to the blockade, are two more steps in a new reality in Israel-Palestine that has been developing over the past several years.  This reality is that in spite of the Palestinian Authority’s victory at the United Nations, Gaza is becoming a state separate from the Palestinian Authority and the West Bank.  Gaza/Hamas/ status was advanced by its non-loss in the recent war, and will be further accelerated as Israel and the United States work to minimize any positive payoff to the Palestinian people of the Palestinian Authority’s win in the United Nations.

Gaza is already bounded by the 1967 border (the Green Line).  Gaza is self ruled by Hamas.  And most important, Hamas/Gaza has gotten significant international recognition – the Emir of Qatar visited a few weeks ago, and during the conflict the Secretary General of the Arab League, the Prime Minister of Egypt, and the Foreign Ministers of Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, the Palestinian Authority, Qatar, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and Sudan all visited Gaza.  All these diplomats treated Gaza as a de facto state.  Meanwhile, Mahmoud Abbas, Fatah and the Palestinian Authority were sidelined.

Israel repeatedly negotiated with Hamas.  Israel and Hamas negotiated for the June 2008 cease-fire, the cease-fire that ended the 2008-09 Gaza Bombardment (known by Israel as Cast Lead), for the prisoner exchange that released Gilad Shalit, and the present cease-fire.  Israel conducted these negotiation through Egypt as a face-saving tactic so it can say it is not negotiating with Hamas.  But there is no doubt that Israel knows it is talking to Hamas.

What is a State?

Statehood is defined by the 1933 Treaty of Montevideo (link to en.wikipedia.org).  Four criteria are set out that characterize a state:

1.      A permanent population

2.      A defined territory

3.      A government

4.     The capacity to enter into relations with the other states.

Gaza/Hamas meets all four criteria.

By contrast, the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank only clearly meets criteria 1 and 3, less clearly meets criterion 4; and fails to meet criterion 2 due to the Israeli occupation.

As Gaza becomes a state and the Palestinian Authority gets weaker, Israel will exert more and more control over the West Bank.  Israel will move to become a “greater Israel” that will extend over all of Area C and some unpopulated parts of Area B – more than half the West Bank.  This will only bring about 125,000 Palestinians into Israel, hardly changing the demographic mix and not threatening Israel’s Jewish character.

Most of the 2.6 million West Bank Palestinians will be confined to Bantustans that occupy all of Area A and most of Area B.  That is, the Palestinian Authority will be isolated in about half the West Bank or about 10% of Mandate Palestine.  These Bantustans will be “islands” within the greater Israel, and will probably still be under the thumb of the Israeli military.  It is unlikely they will meet the Montevideo criteria for statehood.

Summing up the above, we may soon see a two-and-a-half state solution in Israel-Palestine.  Greater Israel and Gaza will each be seen as viable states, and the Palestinian Authority will exist in sub-state Bantustans.

Israel will likely be tacitly supportive of Gaza statehood.  After all, a strong, independent Gaza and a weak Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, is exactly the situation in which Israel can pursue its dream of a Greater Israel as outlined above.

A strong Gaza that meets the Montevideo criteria for statehood, If it wished, it would have a fair chance of attaining U.N. membership.  But that would trigger a final schism with the Palestinians Authority, and Hamas probably would not want that to happen.  Instead, Hamas will be generally supportive of Palestinian Authority efforts for liberation as it did in publically supported the PLOs efforts to up Palestinians status in the United.  It seems Hamas accepts the PLO as the official representative of the Palestinian people in international forums.  And just recently Hamas leader Khaled Meshal proposed that Hamas join the PLO and called for called for new PLO elections that would include Hamas (link to www.nytimes.com).

Consequences

A two-and-a-half state solution will be good for the people of Gaza, but bad for the people of Israel and the Bantustan Palestinian Authority.  Gaza will be independent and slowly revive its economy and civic institutions.

That will not be the case for Palestinians in the Bantustans.  Their economy will continue to be degraded because all exports and imports will be at the whims of Israel.  But the Palestinians will not go quietly into their Bantustans.  Palestinian resistance will continue as it has for 45 years.  Israel will still have to petrol the acquired parts of the West Bank in a vain attempt to subdue the Palestinian people.  Israel will still face perpetual war.

Gaza is working its way to freedom, but the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will continue.
