Ramadan 2015: The best apps to help Muslims observe the Holy Month

Muslims around the world are preparing for a month of fasting and studying the Koran to deepen their faith.

But now there are all sort of apps to help Islamic people observe Ramadan more effectively – and there’s been a sharp increase in downloads.

“Our data shows that usage of Muslim related apps is surging,” said Moshe Alexenberg from Similar Web, an Israeli firm which monitors the internet.
To produce the analysis, Similar Web measured data from its panel of users, as well as directly monitoring web traffic in the UK.

So what apps are British Muslims using to prepare for the Holy Month ?

Ramadan Legacy

This app has leaped 836 places in the Google app charts, Similar Web told us.

It is a newly-developed program which allows Muslims to keep a Ramadan journal, plan their fasts and hear stories from other people around the world.

“The app aims to enhance your experience of Ramadan through combining smart technology and beautiful design with spirituality and learning,” its designers said.

Qibla Compass

This handy program points to Mecca, allowing Muslims to direct their prayers.
It also gives the exact distance in miles and can be used in a variety of languages.

The app has jumped 84 places in the Google Play rankings to become the six hundred and seventy-first most popular app in the UK.

Muslim Pro

Claiming to be the most popular Islamic app in Britain, Muslim Pro offers “the most accurate prayer time application on mobile devices”.

It tells you when to pray and fast, as well as offering directions to nearby halal restaurants when it’s time to eat.
The app is something of a one stop shop, with a full diary of Islamic events and even a copy of the Koran complete with recitations.

This handy app draws influence from popular photo-editing programs, but allows users to emblazon their images with religious quotes.

Muslims can choose from a variety of religious issues and then share their words on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter.

The app is particularly popular in the Middle East, where it is popular among young people.

al Quran

This is a must for Ramandan: a searchable version of the Islamic holy book complete with translations and recitations.
It is customary to study the Koran during Ramadan, so this app can expect to receive heavy usage.

Best of all, it’s free.
