72 Virgins in Islam Male? or Female?

72 Virgins in Islam Male? or Female?

Some say 70 or 72 virgin girls with large (you know what) waiting in Jennah. Others told we have like boys and girls both. But would like to know what is really being taught about this in Islam, if anything?

As usual, we should begin by understanding the meaning of the words from Arabic to English:

Classical Arabic usage

According to classical Arabic usage in the time when the Qur’an was recited by Muhammad:
Hur حور is one word which is the plural of Hawraa’  حوراء which is a word that describes a woman having eyes with a marked contrast of white and black, also said of the eye intensely white and deep black.

It is also the plural of Huriya حورية

AlEin العين is another word which is the plural of Einaa’ عيناء meaning a woman with beautiful wide eyes.

Hur’in is made of two words Hur as well as In. The word ‘Hur’ is the plural of both Ahwar (Masculine) and Hawra (Feminine) which literally translates as “white-eyed”, or persons distinguished by Hawar, signifying “intense whiteness of the eyeballs and lustrous black of the pupils.” (ref: Qamus ), hence ‘the purity’ (ref: Tafsir al’Tabari, and Tafsir al-Razi in 3:52).

And as for the phrase, “In it is the plural of both ‘Ayan’ (Masculine) and ‘Ainao’ (Feminine)”, it was also used to refer to the beautiful eyes of the wild-cow whose eyes are blond. In general, this word implies ‘most beautiful eye’ irrespective of the person’s gender. Thus, it seems that the most appropriate English rendering of the compound word Hur’In might be: “Companions pure, most beautiful of eye, and it is applicable to both male and female.

First of all, there are a few mistakes in what you said in your question.

There are “males” mentioned to be in the Jennah. These are young males who are always smiling and shy-like and the best of attendants to those who achieve the Paradise. The “huri” are mentioned as “hurlayn” (two females).

One translator has referred to these two (based on other verses and hadeeth) as: two “perpetual” virgins.

Like the males, they are also shy-like and attentive to the people of Paradise. The fact they are perpetual and have never been touched by “jinn or men” in a sexual way, is proof enough this is not all about sexual relations.

Second, the things in Jennah are not like anything here on earth. Whereas, nothing here on earth is perfect, EVERYTHING in Jennah is exactly perfect, and it is perfect for each individual. The food of Paradise is beyond description and the sounds cannot even be imagined. The things of this world would only be thought of as something much less and not comparable to the things of Paradise.

Third, the goal of the Muslims is not to go to jennah (paradise) for girls or sex.

Let’s consider the following –

Qur’anic description:

The houri have variously been described as being “restraining their glances (chaste)”, “modest gaze”, “wide and beautiful/lovely eyes”, “like pearls”, “spouse”, “companions of equal age”, “splendid” and much more besides.Other descriptions: Some descriptions are more superficial than others. For example, “non-menstruating/urinating/defecating and childfree or being able to have a short pregnancy lasting an hour”, “with bodies not affected by pregnancy or breast-feeding”, “60 cubits [27.5 meters] tall”, “7 cubits [3.2 meters] in width”, “transparent to the marrow of their bones”, “eternally young”, “hairless except the eyebrows and the head”, “pure”, “beautiful”, etc.

Now let us come to the subject of the nature of the people of Jennah, inshallah. They are not like here. People of the dunyah are born into this world without being able to choose anything about the whole thing. People of Jennah can even choose which door they would like to enter by, in many cases. In this life we make choices, but don’t always get what we want. Paradise is the place where the inhabitants always get exactly what they want or better.

Each time the people of the Paradise eat, it will be better than anything prior. The food will always be perfect, and the flavor excellent. There will not be any burping or choking, coughing, throwing up or gas problems from food. There will not be any food being digested and moving to the bowels or kidneys to be excerted as here on earth. Food is simple eaten, swallowed and then it comes out of the pores of the skin as a mist and then it returns back to its original form and shape. There is no need of eating to maintain health or to keep fit. This is completely different.

The same is true of the other things of the body, because the body of the Paradise is not the body of this world. Everything is perfect. The women do not have monthly cycles, nor do they go to the bathroom or any of the things for relief as we know it here. This helps us to understand there would not be physical relations as we know them here. The evil thoughts and lust are not a part of the Paradise. Only pure and good things are there.

For those people whose minds are engrossed in the filth and folly of this life, naturally they will try to compare what we know about the Jennah to their own sick, dirty and unfulfilled world. When they try to compare what they know to what Allah has in store for the people of Paradise, they will never comprehend even the smallest beauty there. Leave these people and their thinking and come to the correct thinking of the true believers in Allah.

After all, the goal of every real believer in Allah, is not to find a hot babes in hot tubs. It is to be close to the other people of Paradise, those who have the same love for Almighty God and all the prophets, peace be upon all of them, and enjoy the peace, serenity and tranquility of the beauties no eye has ever seen, no ear has ever heard and no mind has ever imagined.

The highest goal of all, for the true believer, is to be with the One most deserving of love, the One from Whom all love originates, the All-Loving “Al-Wadud” and The Only God – Allah Subhannah wa Ta’ala.

NOTE: some people said the word “hurulayn” did not have gender. But according to our research it does refer both male and female gender. Allah Knows best. I try to stick with the scholars of real knowledge and leave the speculation to people with more knowledge than me.

Guess we will find out when we get to Jennah (I pray to Allah to give us His Jennah, ameen). But I do appreciate everyone’s comments – keep them coming… inshallah.

May Allah Guide you and increase your knowledge of true Islam, ameen.

O Allah ! You never wrong mankind in anything, but mankind wrong themselves (Yunus : 44). You reveal of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for believers (Al-Isra : 82), a balm for that which is in the breasts (Yunus : 57), a light whereby You guide him who seeks Your good pleasure unto paths of peace. You want to bring us out of darkness unto light and guide us unto a straight path (Al-Maidah : 15-16). I was in darkness. I wronged myself. I looked for a healing and peace elsewhere. I was dead until You raised me unto life and set for me a light wherein I walk among men (Al-An’am : 122). Many of mankind are evil livers, as You say, O Allah. I was one of them, because I lacked certainty in my belief (Al-Maidah : 49-50). That’s not an excuse, though. I did read the Quran, in which You have displayed for mankind all kinds of similitudes. But I had to be tried again and again until I saw the light. It was a long time before I listened to Your call : “O man! What hath made thee careless concerning thy Lord, the Bountiful, Who created thee, then fashioned, then proportioned thee? Into whatsoever form He will, He casteth thee.” (Al-Infitar : 6-8) You said, O Lord, to Your beloved Prophet : “And though thou try much, most men will not believe.” (Yusuf : 103) “And most of them believe not in Allah except that they attribute partners (unto Him).” (Yusuf : 106) And You said, O Lord : “(It is) the truth from the Lord of you (all). Then whosoever will, let him believe, and whosoever will, let him disbelieve.” (Al-Kahf : 29) I want to believe, O Lord ! I want to be a slave of Yours. I want to be near You. But I will not unless (it be) that You will, O Lord of Creation (At-Takwir : 29). O Lord ! whenever You try man by honouring him, and are gracious unto him, he says: My Lord honoured me. But whenever You try him by straitening his means of life, he says: My Lord despised me (Al-Fajr : 15-16). I am sorry for what I said. I regret what I hid in my heart and mind. “Man is made of haste, ” (Al-Anbiyaa : 37) as You say, O Lord. You created man anxious, fretful when evil befalls him, and, when good befalls him, grudging; save worshippers who are constant at their worship (…) (Al-Ma’arij : 19-26). Man even prays for evil as he prays for good; for man was ever hasty (Al-Isra : 11). I am not trying to look for excuses. I wronged myself, O Lord, and I beg Your pardon.

Unto You, O Allah, belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. You create what You will. You bestow female offspring upon whom You will, and bestow male offspring upon whom You will; or You mingle them, males and females, and You make barren whom You will (Ash-Shura : 49-50). To You, O Lord, I turn and pray. I beg Your pardon.

O Lord ! If You were to take me to task for my wrong-doing, You would not leave me hereon (An-Nahl : 61) ; You would hasten on the doom for me (Al-Kahf : 58). But You are the Forgiver, the Absolute , the Lord of Mercy. You are indeed Full of Pity. You are rich in pardon for mankind despite their wrong ! (Ar-Ra’d : 6) To You, O Lord, I turn for mercy. O Lord, You are Forgiving toward him who repents and believes and does good, and afterward walks aright (Ta-ha : 82). Let me be one of those, O Allah !

I perform no act but You are Witness of me when I am engaged therein. And not an atom’s weight in the earth or in the sky escapes You, O Lord, nor what is less than that or greater than that, but it is written in a clear Book (Yunus : 61-66). So I turn to You, and nobody else. “Verily the friends of Allah are (those) on whom fear (comes) not, nor do they grieve. Those who believe and keep their duty (to Allah). Theirs are good tidings in the life of the world and in the Hereafter.” (Yunus : 61-66) That’s what I aspire to, O Lord. Is it not unto You, O Allah, that belongs whosoever is in the heavens and whosoever is in the earth? (Al-Mulk : 14) Whether I like it or not, I belong to You. And I like to belong to You. I like to be a slave of Yours. There is none in the heavens and the earth but comes unto You as a slave. You know us and numbered us with right numbering. And each one of us will come unto You on the Day of Resurrection, alone (Maryam : 93-95). I want to be a slave of Yours here, before the Day of Resurrection. I want to be a slave of Yours every day of my life. I don’t want to eat and enjoy life and let false hope beguile me (Al-Hijr : 2-3). I know this life of the world is but a pastime and a game (Al-Ankabut : 64).

O Allah, You give us of all we ask of You, and if we would count Your bounty we cannot reckon it (Ibrahim : 32-34). I will never reckon Your favour. I just say thank You, O Lord ! You brought me forth from the womb of my mother knowing nothing, and gave me hearing and sight and a heart that haply I might give thanks (An-Nahl : 78). I thank You so much, O Lord ! I know that whatever of comfort I enjoy, it is from You (An-Nahl : 53). Thus do You perfect Your favour unto me, in order that I may surrender unto You (An-Nahl : 81). I do surrender unto You, O Allah, and I coin not similitudes for You. You know; I know not (An-Nahl : 74).

You say, O Allah : ” (…) with hardship goeth ease ; Lo! with hardship goeth ease” (Al-Sharh : 5-6), and who can be more truthful than You in utterance? You have apportioned among us our livelihood in the life of the world, and raised some of us above others in rank that some of us may take labour from others (Az-Zukhruf : 32-35). No calamity befalls us save by Your leave. And whosoever believes in You, O Allah, You guide his heart (At-Tagabun : 11). O Lord, do guide my heart. Fill it with enough belief so that I may strongly believe that that which You open unto mankind of mercy none can withhold it; and that which You withhold none can release it thereafter (Fatir : 2), and whoso desires power should know that all power belongs to You, O Allah (Fatir : 10). Let me not be of those who follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire (An-Najm : 23). “Such is their sum of knowledge.” (An-Najm : 30) Let my belief be knowledge. Let my heart have rest in the remembrance of You. Let my heart find rest in the remembrance of You (Ar-Ra’d : 27-28). Let the angels be my protecting friends in the life of the world and in the Hereafter. I am of those who surrender unto You, O Allah (Fussilat : 30-33).

If I am thankless, yet You are Independent of me. But I thank You willingly and knowlingly and make myself a slave of Yours that haply You might be pleased therewith for me (Az-Zumar : 8). I know I shall never be secure from Your scheme, O Allah, (Al-A’raf : 99) but
You promised us forgiveness from You with bounty (Al-Baqara : 268-269). I beg Your forgiveness and bounty, O Lord. Had it not been for Your grace and Your mercy unto us, not one of us would ever have grown pure. But You cause whom You will to grow. For You are Hearer, Knower, O Allah. (An-Nur : 21) If it had not been for Your grace and Your mercy we would have followed Satan, save a few of us (An-Nisaa : 83). O Allah, You called all of us to come into submission unto You and not follow the footsteps of the devil (Al-Baqara : 208). Here I am coming into submission unto You, but the devil is always there. Help me turn away from him for good. I want to be with You, not with him. I want to be a slave of You, not of him. I would not choose him and his seed for my protecting friends instead of You (Al-Kahf : 50). I know Satan cannot harm me at all unless by Your leave. So I seek refuge in You from him and his suggestions. I beg You not to assign unto me a devil who becomes my comrade, who makes my work fair seeming unto me and debars me from the way of Truth (An-Naml : 24). Bring me close to You, O Allah, and drive Satan and his seed away from me. O Allah, if You promised us something, You promised us a promise of truth. Satan the outcast will only promise us, and then fail us. I don’t blame him for my wrong-doing ; I blame myself and beg Your pardon, O Lord. I know Satan has no power over those who believe and put trust in You, O Lord. His power is only over those who make a friend of him (An-Nahl : 98-100). O Lord, purify my belief and strengthen my trust in You. Let not the life of the world beguile me. Let me not be of those whose effort goes astray in the life of the world and yet they reckon that they do good work (Al-Kahf : 103-105). Guide my steps and light my way, O Lord ! Lead me unto Your satisfaction and be pleased with me. I have no Lord but You.

Alhamdulilaahi! I’m very happy to read this article and thank you very much for clearing this misconception that we have about ‘72 virgins waiting for the Muslim men’…was so tired of hearing that everywhere by Muslims and being thrown at us by Non-Muslims..and for the fact that it was so hard to refute it when our own Muslim brothers were propagating such beliefs! I always had that belief in me that heaven would be beyond the desires that we have here on earth..but sadly much of our religious education and awareness has been highly sexualized to the point where pure morality and the true purposes of Islam – ‘submission’ has come to be defined too narrowly.

Mashallah beautifully explained; but i would like to mention that in the Quran its also mentioned that these hoor’s will be in the Nikkha; which means there would be a relationship but we dont know what kind and type as would worldly wife’s would be there too if they make it to heaven same goes for men!

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said regarding this matter:

“It seems to me that the women of this world will be better than the hoor al-‘iyn, even in outward appearance, and Allaah knows best.” (Fataawa Noor ‘ala al-Darb).
