What is Shabaan? Virtues,Fasting and 15th night

Introduction :

It is admitted fact that every moment, second, minute, hour, day or night that is spent in the submission of Allah Almighty and His Beloved Prophet (SAW) is exceedingly meaningful and precious. But there are some days, nights and months which have their own weight and Allah, the compassionate, lays immense stress upon them to unveil their importance to his rationale creatures.

What is Shabaan?

Among those months, those hold much importance is Sha’ban and the holy month of Ramadhan, The Holy Month of Sha’ban is one of the blessed months that holds much too for us from the mercy, compassion and kindness of Allah Almighty. Sha’ban is the name of the (eigth) month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and it is so called because in this month the Arabs used to disperse (tasha’aba) in search of water, or it was said that it is so called because it sha’aba (branches out or emerges) i.e., it appears between the months of Rajab and Ramadan.

Fasting Entire month of Shaban ?????

‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him – PBUH) used to fast until we thought he would never break his fast, and not fast until we thought he would never fast. I never saw the Messenger of Allah fasting for an entire month except in Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more than he did in Sha’ban.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

She also narrated “Shaban was the most beloved month to Allah’s Prophet to fast in it till the beginning of Ramadan” [Declared Authentic by Al-Albani]

According to a report narrated by Muslim, “He used to fast in Sha’ban.”

A group of scholars, including Ibn al-Mubarak and others, thought that the Prophet did not fast all of Sha’ban, but he fasted most of it. This is supported by a report in Saheeh Muslim narrated from ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: “I never knew of him – meaning the Prophet (PBUH) – fasting for any entire month apart from Ramadan.”

According to another report also narrated by Muslim, A’ishah said:

“I never saw him fast for any entire month from the time he came to Madeenah, apart from Ramadan.”

It was reported in al-Bukhari and Muslim that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) did not fast any entire month apart from Ramadan.” Ibn ‘Abbas regarded it as makrooh to fast any entire month apart from Ramadan. Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “He observed more voluntary fasts in Sha’ban than in any other month, and he used to fast most of Sha’ban.”

DA’EEF HADITHS ABOUT THE NIGHT OF 15TH SHABA’AN

Apart from fasting in the month of sha’ban that has been proved authentic by above narrations, there is a concept of Laylat al-Nusf min Sha’baan (the 15th of Sha’baan). Which infact is like any other night, and there is no sound report from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to indicate that on this night the fate or destiny of people is decided.

It was narrated from Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah looks down on the night of the fifteenth of Sha’baan and forgives all his creation except a mushrik or one who harbours hatred against the Muslims.” Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 1390.

The “one who harbours hatred against the Muslims” means one who has enmity towards a Muslim brother.

In al-Zawaa’id it says: Its isnaad is da’eef, because ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Lahee’ah is da’eef (weak) and al-Waleed ibn Muslim is mudallis.

There is also some idtiraab (weakness) in the hadeeth, as stated by al-Daaraqutni in al-‘Ilal, 6/50, 51. He said: This hadeeth is not proven.

It was narrated from Mu’aadh ibn Jabal, ‘Aa’ishah, Abu Hurayrah, Abu Tha’labah al-Khushani and others, but the isnaads are not free of some weakness, and some of them are very weak.

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali said:

Concerning the virtue of the night of the fifteenth of Sha’baan there are numerous ahaadeeth, concerning which the scholars differed, but most of them classed them as da’eef, and Ibn Hibbaan classed some of them as saheeh.

Lataa’if al-Ma’aazif, 261.

Allaah’s descending to the first heaven does not only happen on the night of the fifteenth of Sha’baan, rather it is proven in al-Saheehayn and elsewhere that Allaah descends to the first heaven every night, in the last third of the night. The night of the fifteenth of Sha’baan is included in this general meaning.

Virtue of praying, fasting and worshipping on the fifteenth of Sha’baan (al-nusf min Sha’baan) does not come under the heading of da’eef (weak), rather it comes under the heading of mawdoo’ (fabricated) and baatil (false). So it is not permissible to follow it or to act upon it, whether that is in doing righteous deeds or otherwise.

A number of scholars ruled that the reports concerning that were false, such as Ibn al-Jawzi in his book al-Mawdoo’aat, 2/440-445; Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah in al-Manaar al-Muneef, no. 174- 177; Abu Shaamah al-Shaafa’i in al-Baa’ith ‘ala Inkaar al-Bida’ wa’l-Hawaadith, 124-137; al-‘Iraaqi in Takhreej Ihyaa’ ‘Uloom il-Deen, no. 582. Shaykh al-Islam [Ibn Taymiyah] narrated that there was consensus on the fact that they are false, in Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 28/138.

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Hukm al-Ihtifaal bi Laylat al-Nusf min Sha’baan (Ruling on celebrating the fifteenth of Sha’baan):

Celebrating the night of the fifteenth of Sha’baan (Laylat al-Nusf min Sha’baan) by praying etc, or singling out this day for fasting, is a reprehensible bid’ah (innovation) according to the majority of scholars, and there is no basis for this in sharee’ah.

And he (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

There is no saheeh hadeeth concerning the night of the fifteenth of Sha’baan (Laylat al-Nusf min Sha’baan). All the ahaadeeth that have been narrated concerning that are mawdoo’ (fabricated) and da’eef (weak), and have no basis. There is nothing special about this night, and no recitation of Qur’aan or prayer, whether alone or in congregation, is specified for this night. What some of the scholars have said about it being special is a weak opinion. It is not permissible to single it out for any special actions.

The innovations of the fifteenth night of Shabaan:

1- All kinds of celebrations at that night whether meeting for religious observances, recitation of poems or feeding people and to consider that these deeds are a stated Sunnah while they aren’t.
2- Praying Alalfia or Albarae prayer at that night.
3- Also praying fourteen, twelve or six Rakat at that night.
4- To specify Ishah (night) prayer, at that night, with recitation of Surah YaSin or certain number of surah Al-Ekhlaas or specifying that night with a certain invocation; called (the fifteenth of shaban night invocation, they may also stipulate praying two Rakat or reciting surah Ya-Sin (one chapter of the holy Quran) before this invocation to be accepted. Among the innovations of this night also, is to specify its day with fasting or charity or to believe that the fifteenth night of Shaban is better than the night of Al-Qadr (Decree).

fatwa from scholar of MAkkah bin baz whom we follow most:

Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Bin Baz may Allah bestow his mercy upon him- was asked about the 15th night of Shaban and if it has a special prayer?

He answered: (there is no sound hadith indicating the virtue of this night and all the reported a hadith in its virtue are weak or fabricated. It’s an ordinary night and has no special recitation, prayer or meeting and the saying of its specialty is a weak opinion.

And Allah knows best!
Jazakallahu Khair for reading.

We wish and pray that May Allah keep us away from bida’ah and give us strength to follow the only path of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him)!
Ameen

And before any of u wahabis start jumping up and down read what the scholars u always quote say on matters such as Maelor and Shaban and the reason u get called wahabis is because u guys say we follow the teachings of Abdul wahabis hence u r called wahabis just like people who say we are from the Hanafi school of thought n if u have such problem with being labelled why do u call yourself Salafis?

Jazaakumullahu khairan for this educative post. However, I have one question still bothering me with regards to fasting in the month of Sha’abaan. We used to have the belief that the Prophet s.a.w usually does not exceed the 15th day of Sha’abaan when fasting so as to rest for few days before Ramadhaan. How true is this (i.e is there any hadith supporting this)? May Allah reward you as you post the reply, thanks!

Upto my knowledge, it is totally depend on our strength n power. If U think ,there is no harm to fast in the last few days of shaaban. U may fast..or if want to rest , U may do so.
For some people fasting is difficult so its my personal advice, to fast for few days in the last 10 days of Shaaban so that our body get used to fast and we don’t miss the obligatory fastings of Ramadan InshaAllah.
Allah knows the Best !!!

AlhamduLillah, wha Sheikh “Ibn abdulwahab” did is Islamic and that is why even after His departure some bidiites(innovative) people and the illeterate are teasing and cursing Him but i believe that there must b a day that d ONLY LORD will judge between the Sheikh and the bidiites. those who deviated from the appropriate teaching have named Us(AHLIS SUNNAH) “Wahhabiyun or Wahhabism”, only because we follows the authentic teachings discovered by the Companion of the Prophet(SAW)

Salam alailkum warahmatullah wa barakatuhu. Brothers nd sisters in Islam, I want you to know that, in gaining knowledge, understanding is very important. From what I understand from the above article, it is just a preventive measure, for we muslims not to fall into continual practice of innovations. The writer is not trying to condemn all forms of worship in this night, rather he is warning we muslims against worship in this night, with the intention/ believe in the aforementioned innovations. This is simple and clear, and can be justified by the hadith of the prophet which talks about actions being dependent on intentions. Therefore, following the point the writer is trying to put across, if anyone performs ibadah in dis night, with strong believe in these innovations, then I fear it might result to bidi’a, but if one performs these ibadas with unadultrated intention, one can be sure he/she is one the right track. Also remember the hadith of the prophet dat teaches us to leave doubtful matters, for clear ones. Not to forget, from wat I observed, from some of the above comments, I’d like to remind us that we are muslims, as well as humans, wch makes it possible for us to differ in idea, because we do not at all times think alike. So, I’ll implore us all as muslims, to treat our opinions with respect, nd unbiased mind. Even if we do not accept someone’s opinion, dere are subtle ways we cld get across to him/her. We are muslims, let’s treat eachother with love nd respect, that’s what Islam teaches.

I do not see a problem in praying the 15th of Shabaan but I would take this as a special day either all the days of Shabaan are blessed and Allah descends in the middle and those are authenticated so like the middle of 30 days is 15 but islamic calendar is different so I wouldn’t prefer 15 over any other day in Shaban worship is worship you don’t have to count the rewards your getting just humbly worship, I see no bid’ah in this matter if you said mawlid ok I can agree but this I don’t think its a problem just don’t make it ur belief that this night is holy that is if its not proven

Obviously this is a Wahabi website.
Be careful what you read people. Especially young people.
These twisted radical Wahabis are the problems in Islam. They know money and corruption not Islam unless it is according to Abdul Wahab to control the minds and corrupt the souls with money. Look at the Wahabis monkeys running around the world in Muslim countries. Who are they? The bottom of the barrel.

Plz donot commit shirk by calling humans Wahhabi, This is the attribute of Allah only. And I suggest we follow the path of Ibrahim A.S and think open mindedly and open heartedly andaccept the truth rather than promoting what our forefathers followed.
Salam to all Muslims.

Even there is no sahih hadees as per your knowledge what are the problems for you if Muslims makes some special arrangements to pray nawafil and Dhikars. Can you prove that praying Allah on this simple night of 15th is forbidden in any hadees.
If you do not wish to pray to Allah go sleep.

With due respect, i want to tell u that praying allah is not bad, But when praying allah u must know da proper way for doing this..the way prophet ( peace be upon him) thought us. but if u perform those things that r not performed by allah its not going to please allah..for refference u can check following verses.
Surah al anaam (6:153, 116)
4/126; al-Tirmidhi no. 2676
Surah an nisa 4:59
All this verse and many other verses included in Bukhari and Muslim sharif states that if u do nything which is not specified in sunnah and never performed by prophet ( peace be upon him) is not acceptable to allah.Which is called bidaa.
According to u no hadith says that night of 15th is forbidden..but no hadith even tells about any special prayer in 15th of the month shabaan. And doing anything new that is not included in sunnah is forbidden..if u want to pray for Allah, pray all the time..and the way Quran and sunnah says. What is the meaning of praying allah in a way that allah didnt permitted?
Hope i made my point clear.

Atleast you are not trust worthy because the was you wrote Allah SWT name clearly depicts your information about Islam properly…. Moreover its not the matter of special prayer as prayers have already been categorized i.e. Farz, Witr, Sunnat e Muakkida, Sunnet e Ghair Muakkida and Nafil. So one will definitely offer Nawafil on such nights my dear….. If you don’t have time for that go to sleep.

Salam Aleyk!
What the brother on deen is trying to say is, signifying this night, and giving any kind of importance is not mentioned in the Qur’an and the Sunnah! Of course you can peform acts of worship, like offering night prayers, reciting the Holy Qur’an or simply asking for repentance from Allah SWT. But that should be done every night, and even if you do it on the 15th of Sha’ban, it would be like any other nights, no extra ajar or sawab is mentioned by the holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) or Allah SWT himself.
Instead, why don’t people act upon the Qur’an and the Sunnah and perform extra deeds of Worship on the nights of Laylatul Qadr! Which is signified by the Probhet (P.B.U.H)??
Think about it!

Praying Allah for the sake of pleasing Allah alone is not bidaa. So pray any day ,night ,time, and place “allowed” is permisable.I think these days there are too many conflicting ideas put forward by too many and this leave people confused.I follow the Quran. My living .,breathing, eating drinking ,working ,sleepibng are all for the love of Allah. So praying ALLAH alone anytime ,all the time, until you drop dead is not a bad thing. We should not get our brain “knotted” with petty little thing.Let people pray and do ibada to Allah be it this night or that night.

Assalamualaikum,
i think da solution is telling ur parents and brother that, Islam is not doing the thing that the majority people do. Therefore, Islam is the name of doing what Allah subahannahutaa’la told us to do, and the things that Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us to do. U can also use this verse as reference- Surah Al- Anaam ( 6: 116)

thank you brother… but i have one doubt… reciting qur’aan and doing zikr to allah at any time n any number of times will only please ALLAH subhaanahu wa tha’ala right? and fasting for pleasure of ALLAH is such gud act of worship that will please ALLAH right?so my mom n dad asking me, how can fasting and quraan recitation and zikr done for the pleasure of THE ALMIGHTY ALLAH can be a sin??? hearing this i couldn’t tell much more to them..
i’m trying to learn more deep into ISLAM on these matters to find out the truth..!!!
please help brothers…!!!

The sin is specifying it and doing it on that night alone, I believe. If you are regular in prayers and dhikir and you do it everyday, then continuing it on the 15th shouldn’t be a problem because it’s not something you’ve done on that day specifically FOR that day.

The bottom line is, one should do dhikir and nafl salah everyday, not just the 15th. So, make it a habit to do it everyday in every month then inshallah, next Sha’ban, you can continue doing it everyday and then doing it on the 15th won’t be like you’re starting it only on that day.
