I am sure many of us Muslims and non-Muslims alike
have heard of this controversy surrounding the word
‘Mosque’. Many of us Muslims have got this email saying the word mosque means mosquito so we should stop using this word and use ‘masjid’ instead and forward the mail A.S.A.P to everyone on our list.
And you get those emotional blackmails of “If you love Allah” or “If you care for the ummah” or the promise of rewards to make sure you do not hesitate to click on ‘Forward’!
The email is just a HOAX and there is not even an ounce of truth in it. It is just to make us waste our time and energy in something totally useless and to spread falsehood.
There are four possible origins for the word ‘mosque’ in the English language. The first possibility is that it derives from the French word ‘mosquee’ that existed during the period in French linguistic history known as ‘Middle French’. The second possibility is that it is a derivative of the Arabic word ‘masjid’. The third possibility is that it derives from the Old Italian word ‘moschea’ and the final possibility is that it comes from the Old Spanish word ‘mezquita’. These various words were used to describe the Muslim place of worship in the various languages mentioned.
With the above in mind, it is important to keep a sensible perspective when approaching the origin of words. Words are dynamic and over time often change their meanings from what they originally may have been intended for. It is likely that there are many words in all languages that result from the ignorance or hatred that may have once existed between peoples, races, tribes or religions. We should consider contemporary usage of words and the intention of their current meanings as most important.
Another information we get in these chain mails is Mecca = House of wines
According to many web definitions:
Mecca (with capital M) is defined as joint capital (with Riyadh) of Saudi Arabia; located in western Saudi Arabia; as the birthplace of Muhammad (pbuh) it is the holiest city of Islam;place of pilgrimage where flocks of Muslims all around the world head to.
However, mecca (with small ‘m’) is defined as a place that attracts many visitors.
Now the problem is, places regardless whether they are of vice or not, as long as they fit into the definition can be regarded as a ‘mecca’,hence bars, gambling centers and prostitute centers can be considered as one. So maybe since this word is thrown all over especially in the media for any sort of activity that may have been the reason for this rumor. In any case it is better to use ‘Makkah’ to avoid any confusion at all. And since ‘Makkah’ is the correct word why not use that instead?
As to the abbreviation of Mohd meaning ‘A dog with a large mouth’ Allahu Alam! Have no idea where that came from!
Stop your self from falling in Emotional Blackmails or Threats. The ones with “forward this if you love me” or “forward this and your crush will call you and tell you they love you” or even “forward this or something very bad will happen to you” are the ones we usually ignore or sometimes forward just for the sake of it. However, please CONFIRM about such e-mails on Islam before forwarding them. And if they are proven wrong, MAIL BACK the brother/sister who sent it to you and inform them.
Assalaamalaikum Brother, May Allah reward you for the effort and hardwork you are doing in the way of Allah! I just wanted to give you a humble advice. Please do not call yourself king as king is only suitable for Allah, You are spreading the true message of Islam and making many aware of the media hyped image of Islam and muslims. May Allah reward you abundantly for this. May He keep all of us on the straight path…aameen.
JAZAK UM LOHO KHAIR………… I THINK SOME RENOWNED ( PREFERABLY) MUFTI AZAM OF SAUDI ARABIA GIVE FATWA ABOUT WHAT TO USE AS FAR AS MASJID / MOSQUE, MECCA / MAKKAH AND MANY ISLAMIC RELATED THINGS ARE CONCERNED.
Salam! this information is best as its explanation satisfies me. I am of the opinion to use the word MASJID instead of MOSQUE, MAKKAH instead of Mecca and Mohammad instead of Mohd. By using them instead of its English equivalent gives you the freedom from doubts..
I think it’s better to use those words as it says in the Qur’an. some ppl write Coran, Koran, Mecca or Mosque why not Qur’an, Makkah and Masjid like it says in the Qur’an..
@ Mustafa it’s called islamic grounding. or maybe we should imported all from arabs such as clotches, meals, how we should life and so on. please differentiate between saudi arabia, arab, and islam.

This information is helpful and timely as the Muslim is expected to be wise and spend his time and leisure most judiciously. And for those who intended mischief on Islam, Allahumma Alaika-bihim.
