In Search of the Beautiful Body

Niqab3

There seems no limit nowadays to the extent that women (and men) are prepared to go to in order to achieve that ‘perfect look’. Forget false eyelashes and wigs, we are now talking scalpels, implants and liposuction!!

Cosmetic surgery amongst film actor/actresses has been common place for quite some time now, but these days, it wouldnt be too hard pressed to find ordinary women on the street who are more plastic than real! Indeed, in some circles, having multiple facelifts has become a status symbol: the more you have, the higher you are in the status rankings.

If questioned whether cosmetic surgery was Islamically correct or not, then without doubt, most Muslims would instinctively respond by saying that it isnt, for the simple reason that it would be interfering with Allaahs creation. And certainly, this would be the correct response.

The Companion, Ibn Masood, radiAllaahu anhu, once said (quoting what he had heard the Prophet, sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, say): “Allaah has cursed the tattooers and those who have themselves tattooed, and those women who have their teeth filed for beauty and those who have their [facial] hair plucked and thus alter Allaah’s creation.” A woman remarked, “What’s all this?” So Ibn Mas’ood – radiAllaahu anhu – said: “Should I not curse one whom Allaahs Messenger cursed? And it is in the Book of Allaah!” She said: “I have read the Quraan from cover to cover, but I did not find that in it.” He replied: “If you had read it thoroughly you would have found it.

Allaah says, ‘Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it and whatever he has forbidden, retrain from it’” [Sooratul-Hashr (59):7]. 1

So the Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, forbade women from performing these three practices which the women commonly did for the sake of beauty in those days – seemingly ‘insignificant’ practices for which they would incur the CURSE of Allaah. And this forbiddence isnt just restricted to the procedures mentioned in the hadeeth.

Because Allaah says in more general terms in His Book: “So set your face truly to the faith, Allaahs handiwork according to the pattern on which He has made mankind, [Let there be] no change in the creation of Allaah.” 2 [Soorah ar-Room (30):30].

Therefore, it is obligatory for us to accept the creation of Allaah as it is, not making any alterations to it.3

More importantly though, it is also obligatory or us to believe that all of Allaahs creation is beautiful, because Allaah, the Khaaliq (Creator) does not create anything except with beauty and perfection, which is why He says to mankind: “You can see no fault in the creation of ar-Rahmaan [the Most Merciful]. Then look again: can you see any rifts? Then look again and yet again, your sight will return to you in a state of humiliation and worn out.” [Soorah al-Mulk (67):3].

This may all sound quite strange when we consider how often we hear women complaining about their appearance. In fact, it is estimated that over half of the Western women today actually perceive themselves to be ugly. In addition, surveys show that nearly all women feel under pressure to “look good”.

As a result, the quest for beauty has become a serious preoccupation for many women. Open up any womens magazine and you will not fail to find a single one which doesnt contain tips on how to “look good”, or which dont contain huge adverts promoting new creams that halt the aging process or concealers to hide wrinkles, etc.

Beauty today is big business. Beauty contests are very profitable and – contrary to popular belief – more are spawned every year. The cosmetics market is a multi-billion dollar industry; the demand for cosmetic surgery is growing at a tremendous rate. All three industries promote the same notions o beauty that women everywhere are expected to meet: mainly a white, European, “Barbie-doll” like standard. The pressures on women to conform to these standards are enormous and few are able to withstand them.4

The fact is that Western women today may complain that they are not treated with equality and respect, but it is they themselves who have made it acceptable for society worldwide to see women merely as beauty-objects who are there to be ogled by the men who in turn are the (im)polite voyeurs. When viewed in this light, we find that beauty contests are not too dissimilar to reality itself: just as the tallest, slimmest blonde girl gets the title in the beauty contest, in the real world its the tallest, slimmest blonde girl who gets the man!

In Islaam, beauty is not just in the eye of the beholder, beauty is in the whole of creation, because Allaah – the One free of all imperfections – is the one responsible for it.

And as Allaah says: “Your Lord creates whatsoever He wills and chooses: no choice have they. SubhaanAllaah! And far removed is He from the partners they ascribe [to Him].” [Soorah al-Qasas (28):68].

So it is from the wisdom of Allaah that He has chosen to create some of us short, others tall, some fat, some thin, some dark-coloured, some light – all are beautiful and perfect in their own right. That is why we are taught from the Sunnah, the beautiful duaa (supplication) that the Prophet, sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, would say: “O Allaah, as You have made my appearance beautiful, likewise make my character beautiful.” (Allaahumma kamaa hassanta khalaqee fa hassin khuluqee). 5

As Muslims, we must believe that evil and imperfection cannot be attributed to Allaah. 6

The desire to change any aspect of ourselves means, in effect, that we are dissatisfied with Allaahs choice and His handiwork, and that there is imperfection in what He has created. Thus to say about ourselves or anyone else that we or they are ugly is a great sin.

This point was reinforced by the Prophet, sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, when he once saw the Companion, Amr ibn Fulaan al-Ansaaree, radiAllaahu anhu, whose izaar (lower garment) was hanging low (to the ground), so he, sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, ordered that he raise it. Amr made an excuse saying that he had skinny shins (i.e. he was embarrassed to show them), so the Prophet responded by saying: “O Amr! Verily Allaah – the Mighty and the Majestic – has created everything in the best form.” 7

All this is certainly not intended to discourage women to look after themselves and adorn themselves in lawful ways (e.g. wearing nice clothes, having nicely done hair, etc.). Indeed, adorning oneself is something that the wives are obliged to do for their husbands and Allaah rewards the woman who pleases the husband when he looks at her. 8

But with these tremendous pressures on women to conform to the ideals set by the marketing media, it may be hard for Muslim women to resist feeling insecure or uncomfortable about their appearance. Consequently, many Muslim women have shed their hijaabs for the sake of following fashion; Muslim women too develop inferiority complexes about themselves.

We must bear in mind that this search for the ‘body beautiful’ is, in reality, a deception from Shaitaan. Shaitaan has vowed that he will create such false desires in mankind.

He has said (as stated in the Quraan): “Surely I will arouse in them [mankind] false desires; and certainly I will order them to slit the ears of cattle, and indeed I will order them to change the nature created by Allaah.” [Soorah an-Nisaa’ (4):119].

May Allaah always keep us safe from the false promises of Shaitaan, for Verily He is the One who guides to the Truth.

Notes
1. Reported by Ibn Masood and collected in Saheeh Muslim (English trans, vo1. 3, p.1166, no.5301). This incident is a good illustration of the status which the Sunnah held in front of the Companions.

2. Note that this forbiddence applies to the whole of creation, not just human beings. Therefore, defacing any part of Allaah’s creation is haraam. By extension, this ruling also applies to all forms of genetic engineering, which are carried out on farm animals, for example, in order to procure more profitable meat from them.

3. This is with the exception of those things which have been prescribed in the Shareeah, e.g. clipping the nails, shaving the underarms and around the private parts, etc.

4. In fact, some women go to such extremes that it results in them developing health problems – anorexia nervosa – for instance. The carcinogenic nature of breast implants are also well documented now. No doubt, the future will reveal more harmful effects of these artificial means of changing creation.

5. One hadeeth which contains this supplication mentions that this duaa should be recited on looking in the mirror. However, the chain (isnaad) of this hadeeth is not authentic. But it is authentically reported as a supplication to be recited at any time. (See Ibn Taimiyyah’s al-Kalimat-Tayyib with al-Albaanee’s footnotes.)

6. For an explanation of this important aspect of belief, please refer to The Prophet’s Prayer Described (p.15).

7. Saheeh – collected in the Musnad of Imaam Ahmad (vo1.4, p.200).

8. See Musnad Ahmad, an-Nasaa’ee and others. Also, it is forbidden for the husband to invoke ugliness upon the wife – as was a common practice amongst the pre-Islamic Arabs.

Bismillah Ar-Rahman Nir RaheemMuslims against Love?

no_valentine_day

{Read,before making any plans with your *spouse*}

This article is a brief reply to those Christians, Jews and other Non-Muslims who allege that Muslims are against love and hence don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day.

It is a mistake to confuse what they call the day with what the real intentions are behind it. The love referred to on this day is romantic love, taking mistresses and lovers, boyfriends and girlfriends. It is known to be a day of promiscuity and sex for them, with no restraints or restrictions.

They are not talking of pure love between a man and his wife or a woman and her husband, or at least they do not distinguish between the legitimate love in the relationship between husband and wife, and the forbidden love of mistresses and lovers. This festival for them is a means for everyone to express love.

Love in Islam is more general and more comprehensive; it is not restricted only to one kind of love, that between a man and a woman. It is love when we cry for those Muslims being tortured and killed by those evil armies of the west. It is love when we cry looking at the people of Somalia dying out of hunger. It is love when we morally, mentally and financially support those Muslims whose life have been devastated by tyrant rulers like in Syria.

There is no religion which encourages its followers to love and care for one another more than Islam does. This applies at all times and in all circumstances, not just on one particular day. Indeed, Islam encourages us to express our emotions and love at all times , as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If a man loves his brother, let him tell him that he loves him.” (narrated by Abu Dawood, 5124; al-Tirmidhi, 2329; it is saheeh).

And he said: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you truly believe, and you will not truly believe until you love one another.  Shall I not tell you of something that, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread (the greeting of) salaam amongst yourselves.” (Narrated by Muslim, 54)

So Oh you celebrators of ‘Eed al-Hubb (the festival of love), you yourself don’t know the history of this evil custom. Oh you who allege us Muslims of being against love, listen to this:

I am not forced to admit to you on this day that I have known love. However, this does not coerce me to allocate one day for the rest of my entire life to regret the killing of the patron saint of love (Valentine) and commemorate him. I am not obliged to show love to those who are massacring the concept of true love in my country, killing my dreams and corrupting my youth. I am not obliged to behave like an innocent child, to receive a red heart by the right hand while they treacherously stab me from behind with their left hand. I am not required to commemorate Astarte’s (one of so called Greek goddess) rivers of tears for Adonis (one of so called Greek goddess of beauty and desire), while my people’s rivers of blood are shed in our streets. Anemone should grow only on the blood of the Ummah (nation), not on tears of illicit love.

History has been crushed under the feet of those who came to my country. I want to tell them: You will never be dearer to me than Huda and ‘Abeer (two young Muslim girls who fell victims to the enemies’ brutal attacks in Gaza and Iraq). Your yellow smile will never deceive me to forget Imaan and Mohammed Al-Durra (Palestinian children killed by the Zionists). I will not be able to hide my face and share your joy and forget the sorrows of my Ummah.

I am not coerced to live as a yes-man while they compel me to remember those whom I love one day, for I have many loved ones. If they have Valentine, I have someone much greater than him, Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) who taught me to dedicate all my life and days for love.

He taught me that when I love someone, I should quickly come to him, not wait until February 14, or any other date, to tell him how I feel. He taught me that a gift (regardless of its value and color) is the messenger of love. Therefore he said: “Exchange gifts and you will love each other.” He taught me a way to be more beautiful than Adonis and superior to Venus. Therefore, he said: “Allaah is beautiful and He loves beauty.“

Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) taught me that Allaah The Almighty loves me because I live with love. Therefore, He said: “My love is due for those who love each other for My sake, meet together for My sake and visit each other for My sake.” He promised me that I will be with him if I love him, for love of the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) is more than just words. He said: “One will be resurrected with those whom he loves.“

Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) directed me to the verse in which Allaah The Exalted Says (what means): {Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous.} [Quran 43: 67] He told me that the essence of my love in this world is love for Allaah The Almighty and love for His sake. In a Hadeeth (narration), he said: “The one who loves for the sake of Allaah, hates for the sake of Allaah, gives for the sake of Allaah and withholds for the sake of Allaah has perfect faith.“

Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) taught me to choose those whom I love in order not to regret my love, Allaah The Exalted Says (what means): {And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, “Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way. Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend. He led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter.”} [Quran 25: 27-29]

As for those who love each other for the sake of Allaah The Almighty, He will shield them on the Day of Judgment under His shade when there will be no shade but His and include them in His love. On the Day of Judgment, Allaah The Almighty will call them, saying: “Where are those who love each other for My Majesty? Today, I will shield them under My shade, as today there is no shade but Mine.” He will praise them, saying: “Those who love each other for My sake for them [are] pulpits of light, the prophets and the martyrs will look at them with admiration.”

Cursed is this Valentine’s Day whose cherishers from the non-Muslims abuse our Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) with their cartoons and movies. How can I participate in Valentine’s Day on the occasion of which the parliament of the Netherlands said to the whole world, “If Muslims want to live here, they have to rip up half the Quran and throw it away?”

May Allaah The Almighty expose the true face of those who call to such abominations! If some weak-minded Muslims have been deceived by your false, beguiling and distorted media, there are many others who have seen through the facade of illicit love that you promote.

Muslims are to reject it, warn others against it and to fulfill their duty towards it of enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil.

History of Valentine Day :: Valentines Day not for Muslims

love_prophet_or_valentine_No_to_valentine_day_2013

{Read,before making any plans with your *spouse*}

A brief discussion of the origins, development and purpose of this holiday, and what the Muslim should do with regard to it.

The Festival of Love was one of the festivals of the pagan Romans, when paganism was the prevalent religion of the Romans more than seventeen centuries ago. In the pagan Roman concept, it was an expression of  “spiritual love”.

There were myths associated with this pagan festival of the Romans, which persisted with their Christian heirs. Among the most famous of these myths was the Roman belief that Romulus, the founder of Rome, was suckled one day by a she-wolf, which gave him strength and wisdom.

The Romans used to celebrate this event in mid-February each year with a big festival. One of the rituals of this festival was the sacrifice of a dog and a goat. Two strong and muscular youths would daub the blood of the dog and goat onto their bodies, then they would wash the blood away with milk. After that there would be a great parade, with these two youths at its head, which would go about the streets. The two youths would have pieces of leather with which they would hit everyone who crossed their path. The Roman women would welcome these blows, because they believed that they could prevent or cure infertility.

The connection between Saint Valentine and Valentine’s Day

Saint Valentine is a name which is given to two of the ancient “martyrs” of the Christian Church. It was said that there were two of them, or that there was only one, who died in Rome as the result of the persecution of the Gothic leader Claudius, c. 296 CE. In 350 CE, a church was built in Rome on the site of the place where he died, to perpetuate his memory.

stvalentine41

When the Romans embraced Christianity, they continued to celebrate the Feast of Love mentioned above, but they changed it from the pagan concept of “spiritual love” to another concept known as the “martyrs of love”, represented by Saint Valentine who had advocated love and peace, for which cause he was martyred, according to their claims. It was also called the Feast of Lovers, and Saint Valentine was considered to be the patron saint of lovers.

One of their false beliefs connected with this festival was that the names of girls who had reached marriageable age would be written on small rolls of paper and placed in a dish on a table. Then the young men who wanted to get married would be called, and each of them would pick a piece of paper. He would put himself at the service of the girl whose name he had drawn for one year, so that they could find out about one another. Then they would get married, or they would repeat the same process again on the day of the festival in the following year.

The Christian clergy reacted against this tradition, which they considered to have a corrupting influence on the morals of young men and women. It was abolished in Italy, where it had been well-known, then it was revived in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when in some western countries there appeared shops which sold small books called “Valentine’s books”, which contained love poems, from which the one who wanted to send a greeting to his sweetheart could choose. They also contained suggestions for writing love letters.

It was also said concerning the origins of this holiday that when the Romans became Christian, after Christianity had become widespread, the Roman emperor Claudius II decreed in the third century CE that soldiers should not get married, because marriage would distract them from the wars they used to fight. This decree was opposed by Saint Valentine, who started to perform marriages for the soldiers in secret. When the emperor found out about that, he threw him in jail and sentenced him to execution. In prison, he (Saint Valentine) fell in love with the jailer’s daughter, but this was a secret because according to Christian laws, priests and monks were forbidden to marry or fall in love. But he is still regarded highly by the Christians because of his steadfastness in adhering to Christianity when the emperor offered to pardon him if he forsook Christianity and worshipped the Roman gods; then he would be one of his closest confidantes and he would make him his son-in-law. But Valentine refused this offer and preferred Christianity, so he was executed on 14 February 270 CE, on the eve of February 15, the festival of Lupercalis. So this day was named for this saint.

In The Story of Civilization, it says that the Church devised a calendar in which every day was designated as the feast day of one of the saints. In England, Saint Valentine’s Day was to come at the end of winter. When that day came, according to them, the birds mated enthusiastically in the forests, and the young men would put flowers on the windowsills of the homes of the girls whom they loved. (The Story of Civilization by Will Durant, 15/23)

The Pope designated the day of the death of Saint Valentine, February 14, 270 CE, as a festival of love. Who is the Pope? He is the “the archbishop, the supreme pontiff of the universal church, the successor of Saint Peter.”

Look at this “archbishop” and how he prescribed for them the observance of this festival which was an innovation in their religion. This reminds us of what Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allaah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allaah)…”[al-Tawbah 9:31]

It was narrated that ‘Adiy ibn Haatim said: “I came to the Prophet(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) wearing a gold cross around my neck. He said, ‘O ‘Adiy, cast aside this idol.’ And I heard him reciting from Soorat Baraa’ah [al-Tawbah] (interpretation of the meaning): ‘They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allaah.’ He said: ‘They do not worship them, but when they permit them something they accept it as permitted, and when they forbid them something they accept it as forbidden.’” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi and it is a hasan hadeeth).

Important symbols of Valentine’s Day:

No Valentine Day :: Click to Download this Picture !

1 – Expressing joy and happiness on this occasion, as on their other major festivals.

2 – Exchanging red roses, which are an expression of love, the “spiritual love” of the pagans or the “love” of the Christians. Hence it is known to them as the Feast of Lovers.

3 – The sending of greetings cards. On some of these cards are pictures of “Cupid”, who appears as a child with two wings, carrying a bow and arrows. This was the god of love of the pagan Romans – exalted be Allaah far above their fabrications and their association of others with Him.

4 – Exchange of words of love and desire in the greetings cards which they send to one another, in verse, prose and short phrases. Some of the cards contain comical pictures and funny words, and they often contain the phrase “be my Valentine”. This represents the Christian concept of this festival after it was taken from the pagan concept.

5 – In many western countries, parties are held during the day and in the evening, where there is mixing of men and women, and dancing. Many of them send gifts such as roses and boxes of chocolates to their wives, friends and those whom they love.

What do You Understand from Valentine’s Day?

Anyone who looks at what is said above about the myths surrounding this pagan festival will clearly understand the following:

Firstly:

That its origins lie in the pagan beliefs of the Romans, where it was an expression of the spiritual love of the idols which they used to worship instead of Allaah. Whoever celebrates it is celebrating an occasion of shirk on which the idols are venerated. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, whosoever sets up partners (in worship) with Allaah, then Allaah has forbidden Paradise to him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers) there are no helpers” [al-Maa’idah 5:72]

Secondly:

That the development of this festival among the Romans was connected to myths and legends which no sound mind can accept, let alone the mind of the Muslim who believes in Allaah and His Messengers (peace be upon them). Can anyone of sound mind believe that a she-wolf suckled the founder of the city of Rome and gave him strength and wisdom. Moreover, these myths go against the belief (‘aqeedah) of the Muslim because the One Who bestows strength and wisdom is the Creator, may He be glorified and exalted, not the milk of a she-wolf! The same applies to the myth that their idols could protect them from evil or keep wolves away from their flocks.

Thirdly:

Among the ugly rituals of the Romans on this day was the sacrifice of a dog and a goat, the daubing of their blood onto two youths then washing the blood off with milk, etc… This is something that would cause revulsion in anyone of a sound nature, and it is unacceptable to the sound mind.

Fourthly:

The connection between Saint Valentine and this festival has been questioned by many sources, and it considered to be far from definite. It would have been better for the Christians to reject this pagan festival in which they imitated the pagans. So how about Muslims, who are commanded to be different from the Christians and the pagans before them?

Fifthly:

This festival was denounced by the Christian clergy in Italy, the bastion of Catholicism, because it was spreading bad attitudes and having an adverse effect on the minds of young men and women. So it is better for the Muslims to reject it, warn others against it and to fulfil their duty towards it of enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil.

Free Valentine’s Day Presents/Gifts for him and her:

What can be more good for a believer (both him and her) than the gift of coming to know, the reality of the evils of this Eid of the ignorants, and start abstaining from it?

If  you know any of your Muslim friends who have girlfriends and boyfriends, then share this gift of knowledge with them.

This is a gift which is really cheap (cost wise) but is priceless (benefit wise).

Instead of sending e-cards and roses and all sorts of stuffs, send them this article which will be of benefit for him/her in improving his state as a believer both in this world and hereafter, Insha’Allaah (God Willing).

Muslims are to reject it, warn others against it and to fulfill their duty towards it of enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil.

King Abdullah orders blocking of web links to anti-Islam film

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah

JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has ordered Saudi telecom authorities to block the websites that show the nefarious film that denigrates Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Islam.
“On the basis of the king’s directives all Internet service providers in the Kingdom have been instructed to block the film on users in Saudi Arabia,” said the Telecommunications and Information Technology Commission.

“We have told Google to block all YouTube links containing the film. If the company fails to do so we’ll block YouTube completely,” said TITC, the Kingdom’s telecom regulator.

People have been advised to inform TITC if they found any Internet sites showing the film by either contacting www.Internet .gov.sa or www.citc.gov.sa to block them.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) earlier urged its 57 member countries to speak in one voice against the filthy film that tarnished the image of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

“All member countries should speak forcefully in one voice on this vital issue,” said Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu told a press conference, which was held to highlight OIC’s efforts to take up the issue.

He said the upcoming OIC foreign ministers’ annual meeting in New York would discuss all initiatives to set out a complete plan to confront growing provocative incidents such as the nefarious film.

Ihsanoglu said he had contacted US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil El-Arabi and Catherine Ashton of the European Union on taking international measures to avoid a repetition of such provocative incidents.
The OIC has been pushing for years for some kind of a global law against defamation of religion at the UN Human Rights Council.

But it was not passed due to opposition from the US, Europe and some Latin American countries which argued it would violate free speech and the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Punishment In The Grave – Reasons Behind It,
And How To Avoid It

Punishment in Grave and How to Avoid It

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of the universe, may He exalt the mention of Prophet Muhammad who was sent as a mercy for mankind.

Reasons behind the punishment in the grave

Imaam ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, dedicated a full chapter in his famous book ‘Ar-Rooh’ (The soul) for this issue, and he began it by stating: “One might ask: what are the reasons behind some people being punished in the grave? There are two answers, a detailed one and a summarized one:

The summarized answer is they get punished because of their ignorance concerning Allaah, their disobedience to Him and their committing what He prohibited; Allaah will not punish a soul which knew Him, loved Him, adhered to what He commanded and refrained from what He prohibited, nor will He punish the body in which such a soul was. The punishment in the grave and in the Hereafter is an indication of the wrath of Allaah upon His slave; The one who makes Allaah angry in this life and did not repent, and dies while in that state will be punished in the grave according to the extent he angered Allaah;some will be punished for a short while, and others for a long time.

The detailed answer is what the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam informed us about, when he spoke of the two men whom he saw being punished while in their graves; because one of them went around tale-bearing to cause disputes between people, and the other one was not cleaning nor purifying himself after urinating; the second one abandoned the obligatory purification, and the first one committed what causes enmity between people by the evil use of his tongue, even if what he was saying was true. In this there is an indication that the one who causes enmity between people by lying and spreading false statements will receive a harsh punishment, and likewise, there is an indication that the one who abandons prayer will receive a harsher punishment than the one who does not purify himself after urinating, because this purification is only a precondition for praying. In another narration, he sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam informed us that one of the two who were being punished, was a person who used to backbite others.”

In one of the Ahaadeeth, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam informed us about a man in his grave who was lashed once with a whip, causing his grave to become full of fire. This was because he prayed a prayer once without being in the state of ablution, and he also once passed by an oppressed person and did not help him, although he could have done so. (At-Tahaawi).

Imaam Bukhaari, may Allaah have mercy upon him, mentioned in his book a narration by Samurah ibn Jundub, may Allaah be pleased with him, that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam informed about the punishment of some people, like one who was punished because he used to lie and his lies became widespread among people; another used to memorize the Quran yet would sleep all night without praying, and would not apply its teachings during the day;

a third group of people were those who committed adultery and fornication; another ate up the money earned from Riba (usury and interest). The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam informed about all these types of people as he was made able to see them being punished in their graves.

In another Hadeeth, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam told us about some people whose heads are smashed with a rock in their graves because they slept through prayers and never performed them. He sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam also told us about those who are forced to eat Zaqqoom (a plant in Hell) because they did not pay their Zakaah (obligatory charity); others have to eat foul rotten meat because they used to commit adultery and fornication; others’ lips are clipped because they used to cause dispute between people during times of trials.

The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam also told us about a man who took a garment from the war booties without informing the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam of this, and how that resulted in the garment becoming fire which burnt him while he was in his grave.

The punishment in the grave is the result of the sins committed by the heart, the eyes, the ears, the mouth, the tongue, the stomach, the private parts, the hands, the feet, and the body as a whole. The following are some sins which bring about punishment in the grave:

  • Going to fortunetellers and magicians, and believing them.
  • Not paying attention or giving importance to the words of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, but listening and adhering to admonition from a regular human being,Reciting the Quran, but not being affected by it, and even becoming preoccupied by something else during it; but when listening to music, which is an introduction to adultery and the substance for hypocrisy, rejoicing and becoming excited, and even wishing that the music would never stop.
  • Giving false oaths when swearing by Allaah, but being truthful when swearing by the name of one’s Shaykh, father, leader or anyone else whom one loves dearly.
  • Openly bragging about one’s sins.
  • Being untrustworthy with regards to people’s wealth or honor.
  • Having a licentious tongue, which causes others to avoid one for fear of his evil.

  • Not fearing Allaah in one’s means of earning provisions.
  • Severing ties of kinship.
  • Showing no mercy to the needy, widows and orphans.
  • Showing no mercy to animals.

All of the above mentioned categories of people, and others like them, will be punished in their graves on account of their crimes, each according to how much he committed. He will be punished accordingly unless he repents to Allaah and Allaah forgives him due to his repentance, or due to His
general mercy upon the Muslims.

How to avoid it

Imaam ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “In general, refraining from what causes punishment in the grave is the best way to avoid being punished. One needs to sit for a while before he goes to bed and hold himself accountable for what he gained during that day and what he lost, then renew his sincere repentance to Allaah and sleep after having repented, and when he wakes up, be determined not to commit the same sins again. He should do this every night; if he dies that night he would die after having repented, and if he would wake up, he would wake up happy because he was delayed and given a chance to strive hard in good deeds to make up for what he missed out on.

There is nothing better or more beneficial than such a way of going to sleep, especially if he follows this accountability with mentioning Allaah and follows the recommendations of Sunnah in how to go to sleep and supplicate until he falls asleep. The one whom Allaah wills good for, He will guide him to doing so.”

In detail, we remind people with the Ahaadeeth of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam which inform us about some ways which will rescue us from punishment in the grave:

Salmaan Al-Faarisi, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Ribaat (guarding the front lines of the Muslim army) for one day is better (in reward) than fasting for a full month and praying during its nights; and the one who dies while in that position will have the reward of the deeds he was doing to continue (until The Day of Resurrection) and he will be saved from the punishment of the grave.” (Muslim).

* One of the companions of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, may Allaah be pleased with him, asked the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam: “How come all people are tried in their graves except for the martyrs?” He sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam replied: “The flashing of the swords over their heads is enough of a trial” (An-Nasaa’i).

* Al-Miqdaad ibn Ma’d Yakrib, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “The martyr has seven qualities which Allaah grants him: he will be forgiven with the first drop of his blood, he will see his seat in Paradise, he will be rescued
from the punishment of the grave, he will be rescued from the Great Horror (on the Day of Resurrection), he will wear a (special) garment of faith, he will marry seventy two women of Paradise, and he will be allowed to intercede for seventy of his family.” (Ibn Maajah). In another
narration he sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “The crown of dignity will be placed on his (i.e., the martyr’s) head, each corundum (of which) is better than this world and all what it contains; he will have seventy two wives from the ladies of Paradise, and he will be allowed to intercede for seventy of his family.” (At-Tirmithi).

* Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “There is a chapter in the Quran (Al- Mulk) that has thirty verses; it will intercede for the one who continuously recites it, until he is forgiven.” (An-Nasaa’i & Ibn Maajah). This Hadeeth, and others which carry the same meaning, prove that those who regularly recite chapter Al-Mulk and apply what is in it,will be rescued from the punishment in the grave.

* The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “The one who dies as a result of a stomach sickness will not be punished in his grave.” (At- Tirmithi). This reward will be for those who do not despair upon their sickness, but rather persevere through it and hope for the reward from Allaah.

* The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “Allaah will protect from the trials in the grave, any Muslim who dies on a Friday – day or night.” (Ahmad).

* Fulfilling piety, Allaah says what means: “Verily, those who say: Our Lord is (only) Allaah, and thereafter stand firm (on the Islamic Faith of Monotheism), on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (Al- Ahqaaf: 13).
